Description

The MGH Cancer Center is seeking a part-time (30 hours/week) Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Infusion Unit and ambulatory practices at Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA. The Infusion Unit Solid Tumor APP Specialist will work in a newly developed role embedded within our adult infusion unit to serve as an infusion unit first responder, promote infusion services access and efficiency, provide oncology urgent care/symptom management and provide coverage within our ambulatory solid tumor disease centers for anticipated leaves and absences.



  • The Infusion Unit Solid Tumor APP Specialist cares for oncology patients in the outpatient setting.
  • The NP/PA is also responsible for collaborative care of the patient with benign hematology disorders receiving care in the adult infusion unit.
  • While on the adult infusion unit, the APP is responsible for the care of patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders, serves as a first responder for acute reactions and medical emergencies, partners with primary disease center providers to care for complex oncology patients awaiting hospital admission and collaborates with the Cancer Center weekend first responder team to provide access for urgent evaluation and symptom management during off-hours.
  • The NP/PA works collaboratively with primary hematology/oncology teams and nursing staff to ensure continuity of care across the care continuum.
  • The NP/PA provides consultation to both nurses and physicians and supports the ambulatory antineoplastic desensitization program, ambulatory cellular therapies program and initiatives to decrease ED utilization.
  • The NP/PA utilizes advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
  • Works closely with nursing staff to provide complex care coordination and symptom management through indirect patient care and to create capacity for urgent visits.
  • While in the ambulatory disease centers, the NP/PA follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) with solid tumor malignancies enhancing continuity of care when providing consistent coverage
  • Writes orders which are in accord with current guidelines.
  • Maintains and practices in accord with practitioner guidelines per state and hospital regulations Provides consultation to both nurses and physicians.
  • Serves on appropriate intra and interdepartmental committees.
  • Collaborates with unit staff, Clinical Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Staff Specialists and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs.
  • Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
  • Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
  • Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.
  • Assists nursing and medical colleagues in research efforts.
  • Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
  • Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
  • Identifies own learning needs and goals.

Qualifications

Demonstrated competence in the care of the adult hematology/oncology patient

Ability to effectively communicate clinical information and plan of care to medical and lay audiences; able to educate patients and their families regarding routine and complex medical information.

Skilled in creating appropriate documentation and use of electronic medical records.

Solid organizational and time management skills.

Flexibility in scheduling as this position may require weekend, holiday and evening coverage as well as variable weekday assignments.

Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team; can optimally influence and lead as necessary.

Effectively uses analytical skills and problem-solving techniques in both clinical and operational matters.

EPIC In-basket management, telemedicine experience preferred

Masters Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree from a NCCPA accredited PA program required

Current licensure in the commonwealth of Massachusetts as a certified NP/PA required

If NP, certification may be Adult, Acute or Family Nurse Practitioner

If PA, national certification by the NCCPA

DEA and MCSR is required

ACLS certification is preferred

At least 3 years of proven experience as an APP in oncology is required. Solid tumor generalist experience is preferred. Prior oncology RN experience preferred for NP applicants.
