Description Position Summary

The McLean Facilities team in Belmont seeks a Maintenance Technician to join our team. If you possess a variety of repair skills, enjoy working with historic buildings, and want to make a positive impact on the overall patient experience, you are strongly encouraged to apply. Under general supervision of the shop supervisor, the Maintenance Technician performs corrective and/or preventative maintenance; mechanical equipment repair; as well as other skilled- and semi-skilled repairs throughout the campus. HVAC- and carpentry-focused assignments will require basic competencies in minor electrical and/or minor plumbing work, all of which can be performed without a license. Candidate must be able to diagnose / troubleshoot a variety of equipment. A successful candidate should have an understanding of basic building related codes and work with others to continue building a safety-first culture.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Maintenance Technician performs routine preventative maintenance and/or repairs on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, both campus-wide and at McLean residences. Other preventative maintenance tasks will be assigned based upon your skillset and interest to learn new skills.

In addition to scheduled preventative maintenance, you will also be responsible for responding to corrective maintenance requests such as unclogging drains, replacing washers and/or faucets, as well as replacing light bulbs and cords. Some days might call for cabinet installation skills, securing items to walls, hanging art / bulletin boards, or performing minor adjustments on an as-needed basis to a wide variety of equipment.

The technician is responsible to inform Supervisor of repairs which require a licensed professional and cannot be completed by the candidate.

Other responsibilities include:



  • Immediately reporting any unusual conditions to Supervisor.
  • Properly documenting hours worked on each task, parts used, and work order status using mobile device and/or computer.
  • Assisting other tradesmen or vendors when assigned.
  • Sharing knowledge and teaching skills to other staff.
  • Maintaining tools, equipment, systems, and/or components in a neat and orderly fashion conducive to safe working conditions.
  • Using proper PPE, ladders, and scaffolding as needed to conduct work safely.
  • Responding to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

You may be required to:



  • Work weekends or rotating on-call shifts to accommodate emergency repairs or respond to on-call questions.
  • Assist with snow removal.
  • Take OSHA training to operate equipment on campus.
  • Operate a motor vehicle(s) on and/or off campus.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Qualifications and Requirements

The team is seeking a candidate with a high school diploma or GED with 3 - 5 years of experience in any of the following: HVAC, plumbing, or electrical, OR a vocational school graduate with a focus on similar trades and 1-2 years of work experience.

Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.


Required Skills

  • Computer proficiency required. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook or Gmail. Ability to learn new software.
  • Interest in finding new ways to work more efficiently.
  • Effective verbal, written, and electronic communication skills using the English language required.
  • Prefer the candidate has well-developed interpersonal skills to work with a variety of people both on the team and across the campus.
  • Ability to accommodate an occasionally variable work schedule to meet department needs (on-call, weekends, emergencies, holidays, etc).
  • Works independently and contributes as a member of the team.
  • Shows interest in teaching skills to junior team members.
  • May personal phone to complete portions of work assignments using hospital-provided software. May be required to carry an on-call page.
  • Ability to explain, and has experience working with, principles and techniques to perform the types of repairs listed.
  • Exhibits considerable knowledge and proficiency working with powered and non-powered tools.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of occupational hazards and best practices related to safety.
