Associate/Full Professor in Theatre

(Tenure-Eligible)

The Department of Theatre at Northwestern University is searching for a tenure-eligible faculty member, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, in the area of Undergraduate Music Theatre. We seek to recruit an accomplished theatre artist with multiple areas of artistic specialization in musical theatre, a progressive vision, and a high standard of excellence in music theatre performance training. This individual will assume the leadership of the Music Theatre Certificate Program, and will liaise with current faculty, Department Chair, and the new Executive Artistic Director. We are searching for an applicant who is deeply invested in the transformation of the form, and in its future, yet appreciative of the value of the pre-existing musical theatre canon. The ideal candidate will have a national or international profile as a leader in the arts with a sustainable program of research and/or creative activity. This is a full-time tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2022.

Preferred Start Date: September 1, 2022

Qualifications:
  1. Administrative experience, especially heading an undergraduate program or arts organization

  2. Advanced degree (MFA, PhD, DMA, etc.) or equivalent professional experience in music theatre

  3. University teaching experience is preferred

  4. Industry-focused training and experience in Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives are highly desirable.

Duties:
  • Teach courses in music theatre, which currently include music theatre techniques (combining acting, singing, and movement coaching), auditioning, and master classes in the candidate's specialty area.
  • Mentor undergraduate students with interests in acting, writing, directing, choreography, and/or producing

  • Lead a collaborative team of faculty artists and scholars.

Salary: Competitive, depending on qualifications and experience.

The School: The School of Communication has five departments and offers a suite of interdisciplinary undergraduate, professional, and graduate programs. The departments span the communication arts and sciences including the Department of Radio-Television-Film, the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the Department of Communication Studies, the Department of Performance Studies, and the Department of Theatre (which includes music theatre and dance). The faculty of over 180 includes 102 tenure-track faculty. The school offers instruction to roughly 1000 undergraduate majors and 650 graduate and professional students. Founded over 135 years ago, the School has been a leader in developing the communication disciplines and professions, and continues to be a center of excellence in the communication arts and sciences. Our current Dean is E. Patrick Johnson.
