ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF INSTRUCTION

MEDIA PRODUCTION

(NON-TENURE ELIGIBLE)

The Department of Radio/Television/Film (RTVF) and the Master's program in Sound Arts & Industries (https://sound.northwestern.edu) are seeking a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction in sound production and post-production with an emphasis on film sound design. Ideal candidates will have professional experience in film sound design as well as teaching experience in that area. Expertise in additional areas of media arts - such as sound art, game design, installation art, or filmmaking (including cinematography, field recording, editing, directing, producing, etc) - is highly welcomed, but not required. The ideal candidate would be able to teach both graduates and undergraduates introductory-level and advanced film sound design courses that address the conceptual, formal, and technical aspects of sound in audiovisual media production. Successful applicants will be able to teach theoretical and practical hands-on courses in sound design and one or more other media production areas. Candidates should have a record of professional practice and/or creative activity, a terminal degree (MFA or PhD), and prior teaching experience. We may consider candidates without a terminal graduate degree if such candidates have extraordinary professional accomplishments.

Employment term: A 12-month appointment beginning September 1, 2022. The appointment may be renewed on an annual basis.

Qualifications:

  1. Professional practice and/or creative activity in sound production, post-production and design.
  2. Teaching experience in sound design for film.
  3. Skill(s) in other filmmaking and/or media arts sufficient to teach them at introductory and intermediate levels
Duties:
  • Teach film sound design courses at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels to undergraduate in the RTVF department as well as graduate students in the MA program in Sound Arts & Industries
  • Teach courses in other film and/or media arts practices, such as cinematography, field recording, editing, directing, game design, installation, etc.
  • Participate in curricular planning
  • Student advising

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

The School: The School of Communication has five departments and offers a suite of interdisciplinary undergraduate, professional, and graduate programs. The departments span the communication arts and sciences including the Department of Radio-Television-Film, the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the Department of Communication Studies, the Department of Performance Studies, and the Department of Theatre (which includes music theatre and dance). The faculty of over 180 includes 102 tenure-eligible faculty. The school offers instruction to roughly 1000 undergraduate majors and 650 graduate and professional students. Founded over 135 years ago, the School has been a leader in developing the communication disciplines and professions, and continues to be a center of excellence in the communication arts and sciences. Our current Dean is E. Patrick Johnson.
