Department: MED-Transplant Center
Salary/Grade: NEX/12

Job Summary:

This position performs clinical lab procedures in support of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children's Hospital transplant centers. Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical & Good Laboratory Practices. The position requires use of a specialized database and other computer programs.

Please note: Employee will require access to NM/Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children's Hospital.

Employee affiliation to NM requires yearly Influenza vaccination documentation submission or proof of accommodation/ religious/medical exemption.

This position may require weekend on call hours and may include some overtime.

Specific Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedures, regulations using Good Clinical & Good Laboratory Practices. May complete basic trouble-shooting techniques.
  • Enters clinical samples into multiple patient databases following established detailed protocols using multiple software programs.
  • Processes and labels clinical blood samples.
  • Performs procedures in support of clinical histocompatibility testing.
  • Maintains and ensures quality of laboratory instrumentation and reagents.
  • Manages clinical lab data and generate reports.
  • Completes daily general lab maintenance.
  • Sets-up, operates & maintains standard lab equipment.
  • Retrieves patient samples for testing from Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children's Hospital, as needed
  • An entry level in skills below is required.

Molecular Biology:

  • DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification, and expression

Cellular Biology:

  • Cell culture, cell isolation

Administrative

  • Records and maintains compliance data and results & may maintain databases.
  • Completes standard & routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
  • Maintains inventory of reagents and lab supplies.
  • Participates in continuing educational activities.

Finance

  • Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.
  • Verifies accuracy of invoices.
  • Orders and/or maintains inventory of reagent, and/or lab supplies.

Miscellaneous

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work under stress due to the complexity and urgency of the testing requests.
  • Must possess a good eye for detail, manual dexterity and must have the ability to maintain focus and mental concentration, due to the complexity of the work and risks stemming from an incorrect result.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. in science
  • Some previous experience with standard laboratory operating procedures.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Knowledge of Histotrac and/or Accsense Monitoring System
