The Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University invites applications to fill a tenure-track position in Africana Performance Studies at the rank of assistant professor to begin September 1, 2018. Applicants must possess or supply evidence that all requirements for the degree will be completed by August 1, 2018.

We seek a scholar with teaching and research interests in Africana Performance Studies, broadly defined, with a focus on continental Africa and/or Afrodiasporic performance with a comparative component (e.g., African performance in South America, Caribbean, Europe, Canada, etc.). The department is particularly interested in scholars who maintain a portfolio of performance practice and deploy ethnographic methodologies. A Ph.D. in performance studies or in a cognate discipline with demonstrated knowledge of performance studies is required.

In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful applicant should demonstrate excellence in teaching and a willingness to advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in performance research and practice. The applicant should be prepared to teach courses in her or his research area in addition to core courses in performance studies, particularly courses on research methods and performance theory.
