The primary focus of this position is to provide medical services to all eligible beneficiaries within the capabilities normally granted to a Dental Hygienist. The Dental Hygienist shall meet or exceed the industry standards in accordance with established principles, practices, and ethics and shall reflect the degree and care, skill and learning expected of a reasonably prudent healthcare provider in the Dental Hygienist profession in the state of their practice. This position is contingent upon award. Core Duties:
- Responsible for a full range of Dental Hygienist procedures in support of the dental clinic
- Treat all Active-Duty beneficiaries presented for care
- Provide case consultation with referring Dental Officer
- Check history and perform a detailed examination, testing (to include blood pressure screening), and diagnosis
- Perform dental prophylaxis to include ultrasonic and hand scaling, tooth polishing, and oral hygiene instruction
- Perform infection control procedures including disinfection and sterilization as appropriate, in addition to using appropriate barrier techniques
- Perform extra and intraoral radiography and fluoride treatments
- Maintain recall lists and assist in the management of routine Active-Duty screenings
- Prepare instruments for sterilization following clinic guidelines
- Maintain schedules in accordance with the clinic SOP
- Coordinate with other healthcare departments and the clinic staff to provide complete care to patients
- Maintain patient records in accordance with external accreditation organizations and established Coast Guard dental records maintenance requirements
- Instruct in basic oral hygiene care
- Dispose of contaminated waste in accordance with the standard procedures of the dental clinic
- Expose bitewing, periapical, and occlusal film utilizing bisecting angle or paralleling radiographic techniques
- Assist the Dentist as needed
- Inventory medicine and drug stocks to ensure adequate supplies and controls
- Greet and receive patients and direct them to appropriate care
- Receive and screen phone calls
- File and maintain Healthcare records
- File healthcare reports in health records
- Maintain Health Record checkout file
- Input daily patient information into Clinic health information systems
- Schedule and track consultations for specialty care
- Maintain referral log and notify patients of appointments
- Review and verify patient eligibility for care in accordance with Defense Eligibility FF Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS) computer system guidelines
- Prepare and submit appropriate documentation as specified in applicable regulations
- Provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur in addition to regular scheduled appointments
- Perform digital radiology procedures to include radiograph image management on computer software program
- File and maintain Healthcare records and electronic health records
- File healthcare reports in health records and electronic health records
