In May 2022, KeyBank/Laurel Road acquired the student-loan consultation firm, GradFin. GradFin, which is organized under Laurel Road, provides clients with options to manage student loan debt, including refinance and government programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and Income Driven Repayment (IDR). GradFin obtains client referrals primarily through a network of 8,000 financial advisors, corporate and hospital partnerships.

This role will be part of GradFin/Laurel Road's Well-Managed team, which is charged with the design and execution of a comprehensive roadmap to own and manage risk, elevate the risk management culture, and support sound profitable growth for Laurel Road. This first line of defense (1LOD) team helps strategize and execute against Laurel Road's risk management priorities to enhance the risk management framework.

Job Overview

The Senior Risk Manager for GradFin will focus on the GradFin businesses and processes to help manage through internal and external issue resolution all the way through second line verification work to mitigate and eliminate risk. They will review operational processes and identify areas of improvement for risk and control management. The Risk Manager will also collaborate internally with marketing, product, technology, operations, and other business partners to manage risk within the 1st LOD. The Risk Manager will conduct industry research and share industry best practices. This role may have management responsibility for more junior members of the team.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Represent well-managed best practices and perspectives of risk management partners to Laurel Road team members, while simultaneously representing the strategic goals and imperatives of Laurel Road to our risk management partners.
  • Work across teams and influence business partners to identify, categorize, mitigate, and ultimately remediate Management Self-Identified Findings.
  • Assist in the development of and manage the framework and process for identifying and evaluating risk for the Laurel Road organization.
  • Partner with internal and external partners to incorporate learnings from across the bank and the industry to calibrate risk strategies and capabilities.
  • Develop and execute on continuous improvement programs designed to improve risk identification, mitigation, and process efficacy.
  • Support and enhance the governance of Laurel Road 1st LOD risk management through reporting, KPIs, benchmarking, and cross-functional product and risk forums.
  • Partner with analytics and technology teams to develop the capabilities for more automation and real-time availability of reporting risk measures, etc.
  • Support active management of Credit, Operational and Compliance risk management across all Laurel Road products.
  • Support development of a sound culture of managing risk throughout Laurel Road business by developing and enhancing training to support enterprise risk awareness and the escalation and resolution processes.
  • Manage through issue resolution by clearly identifying the control breakdown, remediation plan and the steps need to assert closure.
  • Lead liaison to coordinate all internal and external exams with LOB Subject matter experts, the Business Risk and Control Office, the Second line of Defense, the Third line of Defense, and all external examiners.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree and industry experience preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience working in risk management, preferably in Consumer Lending and preferably in the areas of Operational or Compliance risk
  • Able to help assess and manage risk, balancing the perspectives from multiple Risk Management (1LOD & 2LOD) partners with goals of growth, innovation, product management, servicing, and experience within Laurel Road.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of risk management best practices related to risk, including compliance, credit, operations, third-party, strategic, and reputational.
  • Deep experience influencing cross-functionally across teams and business partners.
  • Strong project management or program execution experience a plus.
  • Proven ability to build strong collaborative relationship with internal partners throughout the organization including business development teams, operations, compliance and all other areas of risk.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with PCs and standard Microsoft Office software.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position is eligible to earn a base salary in the range of $110,000 to $135,000 annually depending on job-related factors such as level of experience. Compensation for this role also includes eligibility for short-term incentive compensation and deferred incentive compensation subject to individual and company performance.
