Histology Technician III-ANTS Lab

Under the direct supervision of the Lab Manager or Supervisor and the guidance of the Pathologist, the Histology Tech III is responsible for accurately performing all of the tasks of the Histology Tech I and II, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy of paraffin sections, routine H&E staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry procedures in a prompt, efficient, and accurate manner. The Histology Tech III is also responsible for performing specialized research procedures as well as performing troubleshooting of advanced procedures. The Histology Tech III is able to work independently with minimum supervision and may oversee the work of the Histology Tech I and II. The Histology Tech III is subject to overtime as necessary.

Position is assigned to the ANTS (Anatomic & Neuropathology Translational) Lab which is a Pathology translational core processing tissues and performing other testing on human tissue related to clinical research aims. Position will work M-F 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No weekend or holiday coverage is currently required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Under the direct supervision of the Lab Manager or Supervisor, accurately performs all laboratory procedures (routine and specialized) in the laboratory. This includes independently developing, performing, and troubleshooting advanced procedures, including immunohistochemistry. Assists supervisory personnel as required. Ensures that appropriate actions are taken concerning problem resolution, follow-up, and documentation. Enters and retrieves data including patient information if applicable, receives and accessions cases; orders workload and verifies completed workload using computer. Maintains positive patient identification throughout the testing process if applicable. Reports any issues related to patient safety to the Manager or Laboratory Administration in a timely manner.
  • Manages troubleshooting and preventive maintenance procedures. Demonstrates advanced troubleshooting skills. Acts as liaison with vendor/manufacturer in problem situations. Reviews preventive maintenance and instrument calibration records. Establishes maintenance procedures and schedules. Ensures that all maintenance is documented as appropriate.
  • Evaluates and tests new procedures and/or instrumentation and establishes maintenance protocols, including advanced protocols for performing immunohistochemistry. Responsible for Antibody Preparation for IHC tests. Assists with development of new special stain tests and IHC tests Demonstrates advanced troubleshooting skills of IHC tests. Recommends approval of new procedures and instrumentation
  • Assists the Manager in maintaining Quality Control (QC) and Quality Program records to meet standards/requirements of hospital and licensing accrediting agencies. Reviews and resolves problems with QC. Ensures documentation of all QC failures. Assist with designs and implementation of QC procedures. Assists with the development of Quality Program monitors. Collects data as required. Ensures compliance with all standards/requirements of hospital and licensing/accrediting agencies.
  • Contributes to the goals and objectives of the laboratory These goals and objectives are defined and are utilized in the performance evaluation
  • Orientation, Training and Procedures. Assists in maintaining a training program and manual. Assists in writing and maintaining current procedure manuals (where appropriate).Responsible for ensuring that new personnel, students, trainees and residents are trained/managed properly. Responsible for ensuring that all changes in procedures are effectively communicated.
  • Assists in scheduling of workflow to ensure adequate coverage in the lab at all times Evaluates daily workload and makes appropriate adjustments of work/assignment schedules
  • Inventories, receives and stores supplies Responsible for ordering supplies for the laboratory
  • Participates in continuing education
  • Performs other duties as assigned in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High School Diploma/GED with completion of a NAACLS approved Histology Technician or Histology Technologist training program or equivalent in concordance with current federal and state regulations required.
  • Associate's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Six (6) years of histology lab experience required

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • (ASCP-HSTCH) or (ASCP-HSTGT) Certification as either a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist by the ASCP Board of Certification required
  • (ASCP-QIHC) Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) by the ASCP Board of Certification preferred

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $26.00 - $45.50 per hour for the role of Histology Technician III-ANTS Lab.
