JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Penn State College Medicine, Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology, and the Mnatsakanyan lab, in Hershey, PA is immediately seeking a Researcher to study metabolism, mitochondrial function and cell death mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate will work on an integrated research project combining structural (cryo-electron microscopy and tomography) and electrophysiology (patch-clamp and planar lipid bilayer recordings) approaches to study the mitochondria-mediated cell death pathways in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. The candidate will specifically be involved in large-scale protein purification, reconstitution and cryo-EM studies, animal handling and isolation of neuronal mitochondria. The selected individual will be expected to assist in developing, designing and conducting research projects and will gain the training and experience needed to become an independent researcher in the growing field of mitochondrial physiology. Qualified candidates should have a master's or terminal degree in biophysics, biochemistry, neuroscience, pharmaceutical sciences or related areas in hand by time of start. Experience in one of the following areas is preferred: animal models of neurodegenerative disease, protein biochemistry/biophysics, cryo-EM, cryo-ET. This is a limited-termnon-tenure lineposition funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.
