The Tax Manager is responsible for using their specialized education in the fields of accounting and taxation to apply professional independent judgment and skepticism while overseeing accountants. The manager develops and maintains expertise on specialized accounting and taxation practices applicable to entities in the industry or specialization, including revenue recognition practices, asset valuation and realization matters, accounting for financial instruments and derivatives, and equity/fund/partnership accounting matters. Essential Duties:
- Effectively plan multiple engagements simultaneously, managing operations and revenue, and delegates to and supervises associates. Considered a primary resource of technical knowledge and demonstrates sound knowledge of topics through a broad range of experiences
- Prepare federal and state corporate, individual, and partnership returns, including exercising professional judgment with respect to issue identification to develop solutions to tax issues in returns. Assumes responsibility for complex tax returns
- Successfully completes research on highly complex tax matters, demonstrating thorough knowledge of the problems, issues and best solutions in the circumstances
- Analyzes the tax costs, liabilities, and benefits and prepares documentation to support tax reporting for federal, state and foreign taxes. Make projections on future tax liabilities based on variable options to make client recommendations as part of the tax planning process
- Analyze depreciation to determine proper methodology for tax impact on client engagements to decide best treatment of disposal for obsolescence and new fixed assets placed in service
- Set achievable "new business" as well as "cross-selling" revenue goals for current and subsequent years. Utilizes the Business Development Platform to track opportunities and wins
- Initiates risk management strategies and tactics. Identify and communicates areas of exposure to risk, and participates in discussions to mitigate the risk. Ensure quality control procedures are being executed
- Manage people and functions through the following skills, but not limited to; coaching, decision making, problem solving, strategy & planning, delegation, leadership and team building
Additional responsibilities:
- Proactively participate in professional development opportunities, i.e. Mentoring Program, Coaching, Continuing Professional Education Courses, etc.
- Keep current on professional pronouncements (i.e. tax law changes, FASB/ASC, pronouncements, etc.)
- Contributes to articles or other media to be included in the Firm's newsletters and/or industry publications by assisting with research and writing projects, or other media
- Displays willingness to participate in Firm marketing and recruiting activities. Help identify and recruit quality candidates
- Working beyond standard hours is expected during busy season
- Minimal travel to client sites may be required
- Ability to work in office a minimum of 3 days a week
- Additional responsibilities, not listed above may be expected as needed
Qualifications:
- BA/BS/MS in Accounting or Tax from an accredited college or university (minimum of 150 college credits earned before start date). Masters in Taxation degree or LLM in Taxation preferred
- Must have CPA license
- Working knowledge of tax laws/Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- 5+ years of relevant public accounting experience preferred; experience in tax provision a plus
- Basic technology skills with proficiency in Excel, Word & PowerPoint required.
- Working knowledge and experience with ProSystem Fx Engagement Tax, CCH Axcess, BNA Online, Sureprep, and Go File Room are a plus
- Working knowledge of federal and state tax compliance
- Knowledge and experience in ASC 740 tax provision
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to listen effectively
- Effective time management, organizational, and analytical abilities.
- Flexibility and openness to work on a variety of assignments; able to multi-task.
- Work well under pressure and with a team; able to meet deadlines with accuracy
- Strong technical skills pertaining to tax preparation and review, tax compliance, agency correspondence and tax research
