Responsibilities

  • Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
  • Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
  • Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
  • Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
  • Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.
  • Responsible for patient registration, lab test ordering, specimen receipt, accessioning, processing and specimen distribution according to protocol.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
  • Performs proper drug screen collection and processing, as assigned
  • Answers laboratory department phone calls.
  • Monitors phlebotomy draw list and assigns/dispatches phlebotomists to draw specimens as assigned.
  • Courier duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately.
  • Provides phlebotomy services in a professional and patient centered manner as assigned.
  • Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
  • Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
  • May work with multiple departments within the laboratory or across the hospital/health system.
  • Performs laboratory tests in compliance with policies and procedures as assigned.
  • Assists in preparing laboratory equipment for testing.
  • Assists other laboratory personnel with laboratory related processes as assigned.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support certification through either American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Certification from nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist
  • Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date
  • Experience working in the clinical setting
