Job Summary

Illinois State University seeks applicants to fill the role of Ombudsperson. The Ombuds receives complaints, concerns, and inquiries regarding a broad range of employment related issues from faculty, staff, and from graduate assistants referred to the Ombudsperson by the Office of the Dean of Students. The Ombuds office is not an advocacy or investigatory unit but instead offers active listening and assistance identifying resources and potential paths to resolution. The Ombuds maintains impartiality, operating independently from other institutional offices and also maintains confidentiality except where reporting is required by law or by the University.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$85,000 - $98,000 annually combined with an excellent benefits program


Required Qualifications

1. Shall possess a bachelor's degree.
2. At least five (5) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the position.
3. Experience with conflict resolution.
4. Demonstrated ability to be an active listener, flexible, diplomatic, ethical, fair, and collaborative.
5. Demonstrated problem-solving, time-management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills and the ability to work productively and autonomously.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
7. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
8. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
9. Experience working with diverse populations.


Preferred Qualifications

1. Earned graduate degree.
2. Seven (7) years professional ombuds experience.
3. At least three (3) years membership in the International Ombuds Association
4. Experience in higher education and familiarity with university populations (faculty, staff, students), shared governance, and prevalent values and cultural norms.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods.
2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
