I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Follows established protocols to perform various procedures, including the most complex for an assigned area.
2. Performs all aspects of non-gynecological specimen processing. Follows protocols that incorporate various standard operating procedures that result in a microscopic slide for the purpose of evaluation of various cancerous and precancerous lesions by a cytopathology technologist and/or pathologist.
3. Performs all aspects of gynecological specimen processing. Carries to completion a multistep process that results in a microscopic slide for the purpose of evaluation of various cancerous and other neoplastic lesions by a cytopathology technologist and/or a pathologist.
4. Assists physicians by preparing specimens and slides from fine needle aspirations at various patient locations. Handles needles for the preparation of smears for stat staining and evaluation by a pathologist. Must be able to interact with patients, physicians, and personnel from other departments.
5. Maintains accurate records of specimens received and processed using manual and computer-based systems. Adheres to proper patient identification protocols. Troubleshoots registration, specimen, and labeling problems.
6. Responsible for preventative maintenance and cleaning of equipment in assigned area. Performs troubleshooting, repair, and modification when necessary.
7. Disposes of biohazardous waste materials, and maintains chemical waste storage areas.
8. Establishes needs of working laboratory ensuring an adequate inventory of supplies.
9. Performs a variety of routine duties following established protocols to assist in laboratory processes, such as: preparing reagents and solutions, repairing slides, triaging specimens, answering the telephone, maintaining accurate charts, etc.
10. Assists in the development of new protocols for assigned area.

1. High school graduate.

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Minimum of 3 years experience working in a clinical or anatomical laboratory.
2. Ability to understand and solve technical problems and pay consistent attention to detail.
3. May be necessary to work in an upright, sitting, or bent position for long periods of time.
Preferred:

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary.Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
