https://crop-soil-environmental-sciences.uark.edu/ Summary of Job Duties:Assistant Professor and Research Agronomist, Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences (CSES) with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

Description: The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture invites applications for a 12-month, nontenure-track position (75% Research and 25% Extension) focusing on irrigation management and agronomic production systems in Arkansas. The office location will be at the new Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center (NERREC) near Jonesboro, AR.

Responsibilities: This position offers the opportunity to lead statewide research in the development of sustainable agricultural practices for production of agronomic crops grown in Arkansas. An integrative and applied approach to research is expected, working with multidisciplinary teams of research scientists, extension specialists, and stakeholders. Research areas will include agronomic aspects of rice, soybean, corn, cotton, and other crops as needed related to production limitations; suitability of cover crops and associated benefits; investigation of practices that improve water efficiency and utilization, including minimization of its use; and examination of ways to maximize production efficiency. Arkansas ranks third among states in irrigated crop acres. Over 85% of cropland is irrigated. The incumbent will be expected to have statewide impact, which will require research at Division facilities or on-farm sites throughout the state. Publication of results in peer-reviewed outlets and adaptation of research findings to extension publications is expected.

Candidates are expected to develop a strong, externally funded program, publish in refereed journals, and train graduate students. Procurement of funding will be expected through a variety of sources, including federal, industry, state commodity boards, and nationally competitive grants. Graduate student advisement and mentorship is seen as an opportunity to advance research productivity. The incumbent will be expected to work closely with other Agricultural Experiment Station faculty and Extension Specialists to translate research findings into crop production recommendations. Many opportunities exist with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture to collaborate with nationally recognized scientists and programs. Collaboration with Division and USDA faculty is expected, including agricultural scientists located on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Opportunities for regional cooperation and collaborations through direct contact with regional colleagues are available and encouraged.

The incumbent will join an innovative and effective team of researchers and extension specialists with strong connections to Arkansas agriculture and stakeholders. Opportunity will exist to collaborate with additional faculty housed at the NERREC as well as faculty located at research and extension locations throughout the state. Many opportunities exist in the University of Arkansas System to work with multidisciplinary teams of scientists, extension specialists, and stakeholders. A PhD in agronomy, crop science, weed science, soil fertility, or a closely related discipline with emphasis on agronomic production systems is required (by date of hire). Required skills include the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, strong communication skills with the ability to effectively convey technical information to a non-technical audience orally and in writing and a commitment to fostering a diverse, collaborative, and collegial work environment. Flexibility to travel throughout the state is required.

Preferred qualifications include experience in southern row crops, irrigation, sustainability, and conservation-related research.
