Summary of Job Duties:The DCSTEM Student Development Specialist (Academic Advisor) is responsible for the delivery and documentation of academic advising for undergraduate students in the Donaghey College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (DCSTEM). The position also develops academic degree plans for students. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Master's degree in education, academic advising, student affairs, or related eld OR a Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of two years of experience in a job-related eld may be substituted for the degree requirements upon approval of the qualications review committee.

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Experience in higher education settings and experience with complex database systems, specically Boss, Banner, Degree Works, and Workday Student.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver individual, group, and/or video conference/email academic advising to DCSTEM undergraduate students;

  • Serve as a student advocate to help ensure student success using holistic advising theory;

  • Develop, maintain, and appropriately handle multiple complex tasks, including applicant and student databases;

  • Maintain advising assignments in BOSS (similar systems) and, when applicable, facilitate a seamless transition from professional advisor to faculty advisors;

  • Provide advising appointments in the format most accessible to students, including in person, via phone, or online;

  • Work with late admission students to ensure academic advising for the semester, when possible;

  • Serve as essential personnel (remotely) during university closure due to inclement weather in order to prevent disruption of services to students;

  • Ability to advise student organizational groups as appropriate;

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of advising and retention programs within the college;

  • Work closely with the Learning Center, the Care Team, and Student Support Specialists (social work team) to connect students with tutoring, coaching, and supportive services;

  • Assist with special events, recruitment efforts, and retention functions;

  • Navigate and work in all student technology systems, including Boss, Degree Works, Image Now, and Workday Student;

  • Manage student advising files for the transition from Degree Works to Student Workday;

  • Develop and conduct group/individual workshops/training modules related to functional areas of responsibility;

  • Work with faculty and program directors to track program changes and ensure changes to degree plans are included in advising;

  • Work with the Director of Student Services and the AVC for Academic Affairs to identify the need for additional course sections in core courses, scheduling concerns with concurrent classes, need for transcript articulation and test scores;

  • Compileinformationforvariousstatisticalassessmentsandstatusreports;

  • Manage all assigned projects;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of student advising and/or student services;

  • Knowledge of the organization and administration of higher education;

  • Knowledge of student development theory;

  • Knowledge of state, federal, and university rules, regulations and procedures;

  • Ability to compile statistics into reports;

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently with common goals as a part of a team;

  • Ability to make sound judgments and assist in resolving student concerns;

  • Effective interpersonal communication, writing, and organizational abilities;

  • Civility in all interactions of a public or confidential nature;

  • Demonstrated ability to follow-up with contacts and consultations in a timely manner.

  • Knowledge of Internet and conventional oce technology tools is required, including but not limited to e-mail, Internet search engines, and software applications such as Word, Excel, and Word Press;

  • Ability to work sensitively with diverse audiences, including students, the public, faculty, staff, and administrators;

  • Ability to adapt to and apply new technology;

  • Strong problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to self-initiate project tasks after accepting an assignment under general supervision;

  • Ability to travel in state;

  • Knowledge of condentially sensitive information regarding student, college, and record information;

  • Ability to appropriately handle multiple complex tasks that have been concurrently assigned with accuracy, attention to detail, and meet supervisor expectations;

  • Ability to maintain ongoing communication with supervisor regarding job assignments, deadlines, scheduled appointments, and all other activities linked to job performance;

  • Interact professionally as a role model and collaborate within professional boundaries with, staff, students, administration, and internal/ external agency representatives.
