Cornell University is looking for a Director of Development in the SC Johnson College of Business to join the Alumni Affairs & Development division in the city of Ithaca, NY. This role plays an integral part in the fundraising strategy serving as a coach to the development team and securing aspirational gifts.

About SC Johnson College of Business

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business is comprised of three schools: the Nolan School of Hotel Administration, the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (Dyson), and the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson). The college delivers undergraduate, graduate, and professional business programs and initiatives creating collaborative, comprehensive business management practices with roughly 250 faculty, 900 staff, more than 4,000 students, and over 48,000 alumni.

The Opportunity

The Director of Development in the SC Johnson College is responsible for strategically managing a comprehensive development program that executes on the dean's strategic philanthropic priorities. The Director of Development leads the college's major gifts fundraising program in partnership with the Associate Dean. The Director of Development coaches and mentors the major gift fundraising team, comprising 6 front-line fundraisers, 2 Major Gift Associates, and 2 Administrative Assistants.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Implementation:

  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs and Development, translate strategic priorities of the Dean/College into a comprehensive development program.
  • Serves as a liaison with the central Major Gifts organization, college and unit partners, and individual gift officers to assist with prospect strategies that further enhance awareness of and support for the SC Johnson College among major gift prospects.
  • Partner with the Assistant Dean for Alumni Affairs to align alumni engagement events with development goals.

Operational management:

  • Coach and mentor the major gift officers to ensure the are meeting their fundraising metrics.
  • Oversees prospect management among MGO's in the SC Johnson College AAD office.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the entire development team

Portfolio Management:

  • The Director of Development manages a small portfolio (~20) of alumni, parents, and friends.
  • Develop annual work plan for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of the assigned prospects.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 7 to 10 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding cultural differences.
  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on being resourceful, encouraging collaboration, and being empathic and kind.
  • Able to prioritize multiple projects/assignments under pressure with extremely tight deadlines. Excellent planning, coordinating, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in planning, executing, and staffing special events.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective oral & written communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Negotiating skills.
  • Flexibility, good judgment, integrity, sense of humor, and agility are essential.
  • Proficient in Word and Excel.
  • Travel and working evenings and weekends will be required.
