Jefferson seeks a dynamic and collaborative academic physician leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.The successful candidate will also serve as the System Leader for Emergency Medicine across Jefferson Healthrsquo;s 13 emergency departments, spanning southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.In total, Jeffersonrsquo;s 270full-time academic and community-based ED physicians saw 585,567 emergency visits last year.

The Department Chair will directly oversee the academic department#39;s 55 full-time clinical faculty members, ensuring that exceptional care is provided at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, which saw approximately 127,000 ED visits across its 3 emergency departments last year. Located in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia, the Departmentrsquo;s clinical team of over 140 providers, including 55 residents and fellows, 14 Nurse Practitioners, and 7 Physician Assistants, also provide care at Jeffersonrsquo;s urgent care centers and virtually through JeffConnect On-Demand telehealth.

Jefferson Healthrsquo;s 717-bed flagship, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), is a Level 1 trauma center, a regional burn center, and spinal cord center with stroke and STEMI accreditations. As a quaternary, urban academic health center located on the Universityrsquo;s 13-acre downtown campus, TJUH serves a diverse patient population and has one of highest case mix indexes (CMI) in the tri-state area. TJUHrsquo;s 54-bed ED provided care for over 72,000 patients last year.

Reporting to the Dean of Sidney Kimmel Medical College, the Chair will model next-level leadership, empowering faculty and staff to achieve departmental program objectives and performance goals and to ensure the ongoing efficient delivery of high-quality clinical care. The Chair will be a visible, democratic, and collaborative leader who advocates for patients, learners, staff, and faculty. The Chair will actively foster a culture that stimulates team performance and innovation through increased departmental communication and faculty engagement. The Chair will be responsible for recruitment, development, and retention of an exceptional and diverse faculty. The Chair will be responsible for faculty development and mentoring toward academic advancement by fostering opportunities for impactful research with a focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative team-based scholarship.The Chair will also ensure an outstanding medical education, clinical training, and research opportunities for the Medical Collegersquo;s students, residents, and fellows.

The Department sponsors a fully accredited 3-year residency training program, which accepts 17 residents each year, as well as 2 clinical fellowships in the areas of EM Ultrasound and Medical Education. Additionally, the Department administers anEM/Advanced Clinical Skills clerkship, a mandatory 4-week rotation for fourth-year medical students at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

The System Leader for Emergency Medicine will elevate the Department at a systems-level, setting a tone of shared purpose across the College of Medicine and Jefferson Health to collaboratively achieve system-wide change and impact. Reporting to the President of the Jefferson Medical Group at Jefferson Health, the System Leader will drive collaborative efforts across Jeffersonrsquo;s Healthrsquo;s community-based system partners to advance the service line towards Jeffersonrsquo;s mission of becoming a fully integrated academic health system.

Committed to a strategy of continued performance improvement and innovation, the System Leader will strategically lead the service linersquo;s evolution, integrating the delivery of high-quality emergency care services across all of Jeffersonrsquo;s 13 Emergency Departments and affiliated sites of care in order to enhance access for Jeffersonrsquo;s patient communities amidst an everchanging healthcare landscape. The System Leader will act as a visible champion of change and will align Jeffersonrsquo;s ED physicians (academic and community-based) around a shared vision for Emergency Medicine to create a unified and optimized model of care. The System Leader will drive system-wide initiatives to streamline workflows, improve resource utilization, and enhance communication between ED physicians, APPs, and other hospital medical staff.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in clinical operations, ideally gained across a large academic health system.

  • A practicing academic physician with a career trajectory showing increasing levels of administrative responsibilities, ideally culminating in serving as Chair, Vice Chair, System Chief or another relevant role for a Department of Emergency Medicine.

  • A demonstrated ability to advance the tripartite clinical, education, and research missions, including: a strong record of teaching and program administration; leading quality improvement initiatives; supporting the growth, development and mentorship of faculty, physicians, trainees, and students; and facilitating clinical research with a working understanding of the supporting infrastructure and nuances of clinical research.

  • A demonstrated commitment to achieving health equity and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • Experience with the operational and financial management aspects of administering a department, including prior responsibilities for budget management, strategic planning, and resource management.

  • A record of scholarship and academic accomplishments which merits appointment at the rank of associate or full professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

  • An MD/DO or equivalent international degree, current board certification in Emergency Medicine, and be eligible for/possess an unrestricted license to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.iquest;
