Job Summary

Coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Mission Iconic Reefs (M:IR) Iconic Reef Guardians program, including developing tiered experiential, research and restoration activities for dive professionals and recreational divers, creating guidelines, protocols and training materials, and implementing the program. Coordinates citizen science data collection and dissemination to Iconic Reefs researchers and evaluates program strategies to identify gaps and improve program success. Supports other M:IR volunteer stewardship programs and education and outreach activities in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Supports promotion of M:IR and the Iconic Reefs Guardian program through communications, digital media channels, website, partner collaboration and media relations.

  • Coordinates the development, pilot, and implementation of the Iconic Reef Guardians Program in coordination with key partners. This includes engaging Blue Star Diving operators, developing training materials, protocols and evaluation metrics, developing and implementing a pilot for each tier of the program, collecting, compiling and analyzing program data, and modifying training materials and program content based on lessons learned.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Iconic Reef Guardians Program including overseeing experiential, research and restoration activities for dive professionals and recreational divers, establishing and maintaining relationships with program participants, responding to requests for support, regular program administration and record keeping, ensuring participants are meeting program requirements, tracking program metrics, and reporting.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with Blue Star Dive Operators, restoration practitioners, Mission: Iconic Reefs researchers, and program participants.
  • Participates in M:IR working groups and planning meetings to support continued development and modification of stewardship programs to meet the needs of the M:IR initiative. Collaborates with researchers on best practices, evaluates program guidelines, and recommends updates to stewardship programs based on the needs of M:IR partners and community stewards.
  • Oversees collection, compilation, analysis, and management of program data and metrics. Uses ArcGIS Online and other tools to develop documentation to articulate program impact. Regularly shares program data with M:IR Program partners.
  • Promotes Iconic Reef Guardians and other M:IR stewardship programs. This includes developing a communications plan and promotional materials such as digital posters, social media posts, etc.
  • Coordinates short- and long-term resource planning for the Iconic Reef Guardians Program including budgeting, tracking and allocation.
  • Participate in the development of volunteer programs to engage the community in supporting M:IR.
  • Attend education and outreach presentations and events, as applicable, to share information on FKNMS and M:IR and engage new participants in stewardship programs.
  • Travel locally and nationally to represent Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) and M:IR.
  • Snorkels and dives as required to support monitoring and stewardship activities at the Iconic Reefs and associated sites.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification from a department administrator.
  • Supports broad responsibilities related to promoting and protecting the M: IR brand on a daily basis through digital communications on top tier social media channels and the M:IR website. Assists with maintaining and updating content on the MIR website.
  • Builds strategic relationships with partners to develop, coordinate and execute key communication messages, build cohesion across communications channels, set internal guidelines, and share key messaging.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with members of the news media. Manages media inquiries and identifies strategic angles and story ideas for the media to amplify the success of M:IR and the Iconic Reefs Guardian program.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience.

Departmental Requirements

  • This position will work from Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) offices in Key Largo or Key West, Florida.
  • Rescue Diver SCUBA certification from a nationally recognized agency or military. Seventy-five (75) logged open water dives.
Desired Qualifications

  • Educational background in marine science, education, or other relevant field.
  • Experience and knowledge of community stewardship programs, social media and communications.
  • Experience using ArcGIS online to manage project data as well as planning and executing virtual and in-person meetings and training.
  • Knowledge of coral reef monitoring and restoration techniques, Mission: Iconic Reefs, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and agencies and NGOs in the Florida Keys.
