Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida (http://www.fiu.edu/) is searching for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor with research and teaching interests in coastal engineering and holistic wave-driven processes and methodologies to foster coastal climate resilience. This tenure-track position will focus particularly on coastal engineering aspects of hurricanes and the interactions between wave, storm surge, and wind action, and their combined effects on the built environment and human communities. Expertise in wave-surge-current-wind interaction, impacts on and damage to coastal infrastructure, increased hazards under a changing climate, and simulations of coastal hazards through experimentation at large scales is highly desirable. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage with a multi-organizational group collaborating on a multi-year (2022-2026) "design and prototype" project supported by the National Science Foundation's Mid-scale Research Infrastructure (MsRI-1) program: "National Full-Scale Testing Infrastructure for Community Hardening in Extreme Wind, Wave, and Surge Events (NICHE)" https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2131961&HistoricalAwards=false. The tenure home for the successful applicant is expected to be the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (https://cee.fiu.edu/) in the FIU College of Engineering and Computing (https://cec.fiu.edu/). The successful applicant will join, as a core faculty member, the transdisciplinary Extreme Events Institute (https://eei.fiu.edu/), which is a university-wide institute reporting to the Senior Vice President for Research and Economic Development. The CEE and EEI faculty are involved in several major research centers and laboratories that offer unparalleled research opportunities, including with the Wall of Wind (WOW), an NSF-designated "Experimental Facility" (EF) within the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program, and the Wind Hazard and Infrastructure Performance Center (WHIP), an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC). This unique research environment allows multiple collaborations with faculty across the university, including with three of FIU's "Preeminent Programs" - the Extreme Events Institute, the Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (InteRaCt), and the Institute of Environment (IoE). In close collaboration with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, FIU's Extreme Events Institute will coordinate the search. The target start date is August 2024, but a different start date may be considered. Applicants should be committed to research, teaching, and service, and to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates should show experience in, or high potential for, external funding. Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in civil or coastal engineering or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment. Industrial experience and/or collaboration experience with industry partners will be a plus. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Florida (or the ability to obtain such licensure within four years of employment) is preferred. Responsibilities will include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, directing graduate students, and establishing an externally funded research program in the area of expertise. Florida International University is Miami's public research university, focused on student success.
