Job Information

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to support a three-year effort to advance collaborative research and conservation of transboundary social-ecological freshwater systems in the Western Amazon (Brazil, Peru and Colombia). The Research Associate will work with an interdisciplinary team that includes Drs. Elizabeth Anderson, Simone Athayde, Clinton Jenkins, and Paulo Olivas at Florida International University. They will support efforts on four integrated project themes concerning linked human, freshwater and forest systems in the Western Amazon: (1) habitat change, (2) governance, (3) biocultural mapping, and (4) participatory visioning. The project will use a co-production approach and involve extensive engagement with partner organizations and stakeholders that are based and/or conduct work in the Amazon Basin.

Considering the transboundary nature of the project, the candidate must be fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese to lead/support these activities There will be substantial travel to Brazil, Peru and Colombia, and potentially other parts of South America over the duration of the appointment, and therefore the candidate must have a valid passport and ability to travel. The candidate will support scientific analysis, stakeholder engagement, and management/administration efforts.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Environmental Social Science, Geography, Environmental Anthropology, Human Ecology, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with all or some of the following qualifications:
Experience conducting research and/or working in the Amazon region
Knowledge of geographic information systems (e.g., ArcMap, QGIS)
Experience with qualitative data analysis (e.g., NVivo)
Previous experience or strong interest in interdisciplinary, collaborative and participatory research
Experience conducting research with diverse social groups
Experience in project management/administration

This position will be based at the FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus in Miami, FL, USA. However, the position will involve substantial travel to Amazonian countries, approximately 30-50% of time. Candidates must have authorization to live and work in the USA.
