FIU in Washington, DC is currently seeking a graduate hospitality and tourism student to join our team in the nation's capital
If you have experience in event planning, catering logistics, and hospitality and seek to create engaging, warm and educational environments for guests, while looking for hands-on, in-depth event experience to add to your resume, this position is designed for you

The Hospitality and Tourism Student Associate will assist in the planning, development, and execution of high-quality internal and external events in collaboration with the Community and Programming Manager The FIU in DC team is a fast-paced, and energetic team that produces multiple events a year, which may include, but are not limited to, student fly-ins, conferences, and networking events Overall, the student associate will contribute to creating a welcoming and warm environment as we are Miami's Embassy in the Nation's Capital

Duties to Include:

  • Support the CP Manager to curate, develop and execute events
  • Act as second-in-command during events
  • Coordinate all event Food and Beverage (F&B) purchases, catering planning and lead communication with internal/external partners and support the tracking of payments
  • Assist in maintaining event calendars, notes, and external partners follow-up processes
  • Prepare event materials including vendor searches, printing tasks, name badges, giveaway bags, VIP gifts etc
  • Ensure the office provides a welcoming and 'Miami' feel every day
  • Assist in concierge tasks, ranging from greeting guests to restocking supplies, including the fridge
  • Support the team in preparing room for various events, room layouts, and seating arrangements
  • Engage and coordinate near-by hotels and establish a strong relationships

Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a graduate student in the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism college and two (2) years of experience in the field; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience

  • Be a collaborative and creative team member with a focus on excellence and attention to detail with the guest experience in mind
  • Must be detail-oriented, with effective organizational and project management skills
  • Must be a self-starter, with the ability to work well under pressure, and have solid problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Flexibility to work independently and as a team player
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Who May Apply

  • Students enrolled at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credit hours as an Undergraduate or three (3) credit hours as a Graduate during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
  • Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.
Work Schedule

Hours will vary based on class schedule and needs of the department.
