Job Summary

Interacts with potential Wall of Wind (WoW) clients to develop testing proposals, scope of work, and budgets. Assists the Wall of Wind team with the design, construction, and implementation of the planned test including instrumentation, data collection, analysis and technical report writing. Oversees the research data to ensure accuracy of information being distributed and requires that of a research / instrumentation technician mindset.

  • Assists the Wall of Wind (WOW) team with the design, construction, and implementation of the planned test including instrumentation, data collection, analysis and technical report writing. Oversees the research data to ensure accuracy of information being distributed and requires that of a research / instrumentation technician mindset.
  • Designs and fabricates the testing apparatuses and specimens, instrumentation of test specimens, data analysis, correction, and document presentation for various assignments related to testing of buildings and other structures to natural wind hazards.
  • Interacts with potential clients, as part of the WOW team, to develop testing proposals, scope of work, and budgets.
  • Assists the Director, Lead Wind Engineers, and Managers for the Laboratory for Wind Engineering Research (LWER) in the day-to-day laboratory operational activities for the International Hurricane Research Center.
  • Performs equipment and instrument calibration. Verifies functionality of all sensors.
  • Facilitates experiments and acquires sensor data and high-definition videos.
  • Implements data quality assurance (DQA) checks to verify the reliability of test data.
  • Assists in the periodic upgrade of the data management services to ensure data quality checks.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of procedures for the program.
  • Conducts Wall of Wind instrumentation and destructive testing, experiments, and any other projects deemed necessary by the LWER Director and Lead Wind Engineers.
  • Oversees the research database and ensures the accuracy of the information being distributed. Compiles data and other pertinent information for the Director's use.
  • Plans and coordinates the technical aspects of special wind engineering studies or projects as directed.
  • Serves as liaison between LWER and clients and vendors including mechanics.
  • Writes technical reports to present the methodology, results and recommendations.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Works to strict schedules and project milestones while maintaining product quality. Troubleshoots errors to minimize downtime.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of experience or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a research or laboratory environment in the engineering field
  • Experience with Matlab, AutoCad, SolidWorks, Fusion, C++ programming, and Labview or similar programs.
  • Working Conditions:
  • Willingness and ability to work in an outdoor or non-airconditioned environment for extended periods
  • Willingness and ability to climb onto or into structures with limited space
