Summary:

Seeking an Analytical Chemist V with a Specialty in Food Technology to support several different projects related to the development or amendment of food standards and food allergen assignments. Assignments will have a focus on the application of the knowledge of the principles and practices of food production, food technology, and food chemistry to issues regarding food standards and food allergens.


Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assisting in conducting technical/scientific review and analysis of relevant information and data submitted in support of a citizen petition to either establish, revise, or revoke a food standard.
  • Assisting in conducting scientific review and analysis of relevant information that may be utilized to develop or modernize policy on food standards practices.
  • Assisting in the review and issuance of temporary marketing permits (TMPs) for foods deviating from a food standard.
  • Assisting in the review of food standards general principles, theories, practices and precedents as well as the principles and practices of nutrition, and to provide information and analyses needed to assist in the formulation of future policy.
  • Monitoring the status of pertinent regulatory issues and food labeling actions under development and advises FDA staff of progress, problems, or changes.
  • Identifying problems and issues and conducting adequate research to obtain the background, facts, data and current policy on the issue.
  • Evaluate data needed to evaluate petitions and notifications seeking exemptions from the labeling requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act regarding ingredients derived from major food allergens.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentation, reports, and discussions on technical policy issues related to food allergen labeling and gluten-free labeling both within and outside the Agency.
  • Use food allergen labeling expertise to assist in drafting updated editions of The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act Guidance documents in order to clarify FDA's current thinking on the enforcement and compliance strategies of the food allergen labeling law.
  • Assist in the review of international research and policy, communicate and solicit comments from industry, academia and foreign government agencies in order to develop long term strategies to assist manufacturers in using allergen advisory labeling that is truthful and not misleading, conveys a clear and uniform message and adequately informs food-allergic consumers and their caretakers.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Expertise in applying analytical chemistry in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and physics
  • Must possess complete understanding of basic biological and physical sciences and food technology, immunology, and closely related subjects
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, as demonstrated by experience as serving as a principal spokesperson, authoring, or coauthoring Federal Register documents, guidance documents or policy statements or labeling strategies.
  • Knowledge of FDA laws, regulations, legal precedents, policies, and guidelines,
  • especially those related to allergens, food labeling and food standards of identity.
  • Knowledge of FDA regulated commodities, including food processing operations, quality control, and analytical testing for compliance with FDA regulations, such as that gained in analytical and investigational activities in FDA field programs.
  • Skill in applying legal/regulatory knowledge, in coordination with scientific
  • knowledge, in formulating recommended regulatory policy or in reviewing or
  • preparing regulatory documents.
  • Skill in planning and carrying out complex assignments requiring input and
  • cooperation from diverse groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters to Ph.D. (5+ years' experience) Degree: food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science.
  • Must have experience in experience in the food industry (i.e. Nestle, Kraft-Heinz, Danone, etc.) as it relates to Food Technology and Allergens

The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $145,000 per year.
