General Responsibilities
Provide research support to the PROD/ LOA staff. Maintain the unit database. Perform data searches in response to internal and external data requests, grants and collaboration agreements, and state and federal reporting requirements. Design and produce charts, tables, graphs, and presentations. Under the direction of senior researchers produce preliminary statistical analysis of projects and draft reports. Manage logistical aspects of survey preparation and/or monitor budgets as needed. Maintain the unit portal and external website. Work with the staff on special projects as necessary.
Work Performed

  • Use the college's administrative information system, web intelligence system and maintain/use unit databases (over 350,000 individuals) to provide detailed student tracking information. Be able to extract information upon request to assist faculty and staff in accomplishing their core work.
  • Extract files to provide data for annual disclosures and grant applications.
  • Perform data validation and cleaning, assessing and making changes to files; running statistics, crosstabs and summaries of data, or providing technical support or updates to data files prepared for specific academic units.
  • Maintain data dictionary to standardize variable names for data files, keep track of data definitions in the college's administrative information systems and monitor data definitions across college units.
  • Apply knowledge of appropriate research design and techniques to projects. Analyze data from these projects and draft summary reports of the findings.
  • Perform data entry, document scanning and data conversion. Develop spreadsheets and tables for specific research projects.
  • Serve as staff for select college team activities. Post current work documents for all college units. Assist in the assembly of data, goals and objectives in evaluation of core processes and vital signs.
  • Maintain tracking systems to ensure scheduled research work is accomplished on time.
  • Serve as the lead for the HCC Schedule of Reports process for LOA reports (monitor the Schedule of Reports, notify personnel responsible for submissions, and ensure timely transmission of all necessary reports to state and federal agencies) and the mandated training modules of the Professional Learning (module development and maintenance). Or: create and maintain other systems as needed.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of multi-paged, complex web sites (portal and internet) for the Planning, Research and Organizational Development Office/Learning Outcomes Assessment Office. Develop new web sites or re-evaluate, update, and revise existing sites as needed. Research and explore different technologies and formats for web pages.
  • Set up purchase orders and monitor expenditures.

Other Knowledge Required

  • BA degree or equivalent courses and training in computer applications, statistics, math, business, social sciences or related fields Master's degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience in research and planning.
  • Recent experience and demonstrated proficiency using a variety of procedures in SPSS, Excel, SAS or equivalent statistical software.
  • Expertise and recent experience with Business ObjectsTM or other web intelligences system, Microsoft Access, Ellucian or other administrative system (querying ability). SQL experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in developing survey instruments and summarizing results.
  • Knowledge of software relating to website and presentation development , including SharePoint, HTML, Netscape/Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat, and graphics editors.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint.

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
