General Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality paralegal and administrative support to the General Counsel.
The paralegal must be able to research law, investigate facts, and prepare documents to assist attorneys with matters brought with administrative agencies and in state and federal courts. The work requires discretion and independent judgment in the application of a specialized body of laws, regulations, agency policies and practices, and judicial and administrative proceedings.
The paralegal provides a full range of high-level administrative support to the General Counsel including, but not limited to: assistance with drafting correspondence, scheduling meetings and conference calls, making travel arrangements and reservations, preparing and sending documents via mail and express services, copying and scanning documents, and maintaining electronic and physical filing systems for the General Counsel.
Work Performed

  • Supports the General Counsel as necessary to ensure that all deadlines are met and transactions are completed in a timely manner.
  • Draft, review, analyze and organize documents in administrative proceedings, transactional matters, and litigation. Monitor on-going matter activity and pending deadlines in administrative proceedings, transactional matters, and litigation. Exercise independent judgment towards matter preparation and initiate contact with attorneys and other involved parties. Conduct legal research. Perform administrative tasks as requested. Drafts routine correspondence and memoranda.
  • Coordinates with various College units to gather information in response to subpoenas and Maryland Public Information Act requests.
  • Performs research from reference sources including various federal and state laws, and judicial and administrative decisions.
  • Assembles, organizes, and maintains files for pleadings, contracts, letters and correspondence; and assists with policy and administrative procedure updates and postings.
  • Receives and reviews incoming mail addressed to the General Counsel.
  • Serves as initial contact for all telephone calls and visitors to the Office of the General Counsel, handling inquiries and matters personally where possible.
  • Prepares necessary paperwork for requisition and payment of purchases, subscriptions, and legal fees.
  • Maintains office supplies inventory and ensures general operation of office equipment by submitting work orders and other necessary documentation for repairs.
  • Manages multiple calendars, including meetings, appointments and leave; and performs general administrative tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to meet workload requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimum supervision and, to deal tactfully and effectively with people.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously, verbally and in writing, with employees, students, and other stakeholders to effectively resolve issues and provide support.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft applications, including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The ideal candidate must be well-organized; detail-oriented; and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior experience as a paralegal is preferred but not required. Experience working in a legal office in the military, federal government, or a multi-office law firm is also preferred but not required.

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
