Essential Job Duties |
We are excited to welcome an
Assistant Roofer to join our
Building Maintenance and Operations Unit, a team dedicated to maintaining the University's facilities to the highest standards. In this role, you will work alongside experienced roofers, gaining hands-on experience in various projects, including
material management, patching, and waterproofing. This role is a perfect opportunity for those eager to develop their skills and build a career in roofing. If you're looking to learn, grow, and contribute to the upkeep of our campus, we encourage you to apply today.
Key responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:
- Deliver materials to job sites and supply roofers with necessary materials, ladders, and scaffolds
- Assist in patching built-up roofs using both hot and cold applications
- Help with asphalt patching for streets and assist in below-grade building waterproofing
- Caulk expansion joints, belt courses, and coping stones as needed
- Identify facilities-related issues concerning campus roof and waterproofing maintenance, and collaborate with lead workers or supervisors to find solutions
- Perform routine tasks, such as assisting brick masons and roofers, setting up scaffolding, providing tools and equipment, climbing ladders, patching roofs, and cleaning gutters
- Gather and distribute required tools and materials, ensuring work is completed within the established time frame
- Follow procedures, methods, and materials necessary for work completion, including safe assembly, demolition, excavation, and waste disposal
- Perform all tasks in compliance with State, Local, and University codes, understanding and adhering to safety guidelines and procedures while proactively addressing safety concerns

Other Responsibilities |
- This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Basic understanding of roofing systems
- Ability to climb ladders, work on top of university buildings
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters

- Experience working in a commercial setting performing roofing & waterproof duties

Required License or Certification |
- Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
