Job Summary

A Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) substitute teacher provides an instructional program for students which is appropriate to their educational needs and developmental level. The educational program is offered in an equitable, multi-cultural setting and teaches all children to think deeply, critically and creatively. The teacher supports the MPS strategic plan.

Applications for the Substitute Teacher position are being accepted by the Office of Human Resources. The following items must be uploaded with your application:

  • A current resume
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation dated less than one (1) year and manually signed by the author (UNLESS YOU ARE A RETIRED MPS TEACHER)
  • Official degree conferred college transcripts (UNLESS YOU ARE A RETIRED MPS TEACHER)

If you are unable to electronically attach these documents, you must notify human resources that you are sending hard copies. Caution: When attaching documents to the application, be sure the documents are legible. If the documents cannot be read, your application may be disqualified from consideration.

Who May Apply

Appointment is subject to a criminal background check, a drug/alcohol test and credential verification. If you are a recently retired teacher, you must wait 75 days before applying to be a substitute teacher with Milwaukee Public Schools.

As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority.

All offers of employment are contingent on the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (currently one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine) to pass the pre-employment requirements. Individuals with medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs that prevent them from getting the vaccine may request an accommodation from the vaccine requirement.

Qualifications

Applicants MUST:

  • Have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Hold a current Short-Term Substitute License or Teacher License
  • Have completed a Substitute Training Program and has applied for a Substitute Teacher License. (IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE A LICENSE)

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a broad knowledge of all facets related to the teaching assignment as related to the subject and grade level of the students.
  • Uses research-proven practices to improve student achievement.
  • Implements Board policies as necessary to improve the educational environment.
  • Plans and organizes material for instruction and presents and reinforces lessons as appropriate.
  • Addresses different learning modalities, including auditory, visual and kinesthetic.
  • Uses appropriate classroom management strategies and relates well to the student population.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
