The Opportunity

As the Vice President of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), you will lead all aspects of the FP&A organization. The VP of FP&A will be a key strategic partner within our organization, responsible for overseeing the financial planning processes, providing strategic insights, and driving business performance through effective financial analysis. This role requires a seasoned finance professional with a strong background in financial modeling, forecasting, and strategic planning. This is an ideal time for a VP of FP&A to join the company as we embrace the inflection point we are at and the opportunity ahead of us. You will be part of an impactful finance leadership team.


The Team

This role is located in our Santa Clara office 3+ days a week and will report to our CFO, Greg Henry. Our FP&A organization is made up of 11 team members, some of whom are contractors, and consists of two teams: Corporate FP&A and Commercial FP&A. Team members are primarily located in the US, with some in India and the UK.


The Role

Strategic Leadership:



  • Lead the FP&A function, including budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and long-term strategic planning
  • Partner with senior executives and departmental leaders to provide financial insights and support decision-making processes
  • Provide thought leadership around understanding business and market drivers and impact across the business and the different functions



Financial Planning & Analysis:



  • Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process and quarterly forecasting
  • Analyze financial performance, identify trends, and provide actionable recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency
  • Leverage deep financial insights and advanced modeling techniques to help drive business decisions, and align financial goals with the company's strategic objectives



Reporting & Communication:



  • Prepare and present financial reports and analyses to the executive team and board of directors
  • There will be significant involvement with our investor relations team, including sitting in on our earnings calls as well as investor interactions
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively to stakeholders
  • Key partner and advisor to executive staff and leadership teams on all financial planning and analysis related activities


What you'll need (Capabilities)

  • Lead The Business:


    • 15+ years of Corporate Finance experience, preferably working in a hyper growth software environment or similar experience
    • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; MBA preferred, prior Corp FP&A experience in a software environment
    • Strong organization leader with demonstrated capability to build both a vision and a strategy aligned to top line business objectives
    • Well versed in software business models, such as subscription and consumption, and the dynamics & KPI's associated with them
    • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to be a trusted advisor to the executive team, Board of Directors and across the organization
    • Ability to 'hold your own' at the Executive Staff level
    • Informed perspective that balances near-term performance and long-term success
    • Strong business acumen; understands business strategy, functions, markets and risks
    • Experience being able to assess/evaluate competitors as well as potential M&A targets, including modeling out prospective targets and developing synergistic opportunities
    • Ability to help evolve the business model and related KPIs over time
    • Strong ability to tell the Couchbase story, well beyond the financials, both internal (employees/BOD) and external (investors/analysts)
    • Potential to be a successor to the CFO

The anticipated starting base pay range for this role is listed below. Base salary is not the only component of our competitive total rewards package - you may also be eligible for bonus, commissions, equity, and other benefits as described below. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, licenses and certifications, and specific work location.
