St. Paul Academy and Summit School (SPA) is a coeducational, non-sectarian, college preparatory day school serving more than 920 students in kindergarten through grade 12. Our two campuses are located approximately a mile apart in St. Paul, Minnesota, serving Grades K-5 on our Goodrich Campus and Grades 6-12 on our Randolph Campus. The school draws students from St. Paul, Minneapolis, and throughout the eastern and western suburbs.

Department: Instructional Faculty, Lower School

Position Description:

St. Paul Academy and Summit School is seeking an art teacher to teach art to elementary-aged students at its Goodrich Campus. This is a part-time position that begins in August 2023. This position is currently a .74 appointment, with the potential to become full-time in the future. Candidates should have experience teaching elementary art and should be able to work proficiently with a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramic sculpture with a working knowledge of firing an electric kiln. A willingness and ability to collaborate with colleagues on special interdisciplinary projects and excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence in and a love for teaching young children, have had Responsive Classroom training, have a passion for personal expression, and actively participate in the arts.

Candidates are expected to support the mission of SPA and the vision of the Lower School, as well as to contribute to the school outside the classroom.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Planning and implementing effective and age-appropriate lessons that align with the goals of the K-12 visual art program.
  • Documenting curriculum updates on the school curriculum site.
  • Motivating students to do their best work.
  • Nurturing a stimulating and productive work environment.
  • Recognizing individual needs and expression of students.
  • Organizing and exhibiting student work throughout the school.
  • Keeping digital records of student work and assisting students in sharing their work on the "Seesaw" iPad app.
  • Evaluate student progress with benchmark and narrative feedback.
  • Writing monthly newsletters for the Specialist webpage.
  • Keeping track of art materials and caring for equipment.
  • Communicating with parents when necessary and during conference days.
  • Recess and dismissal duty
  • Participation on committees
  • Biannual K-12 fine arts show



Requirements:




  • K-12 art education degree and/or Fine Arts or Art degree with extensive experience teaching art to lower school students.
  • Portfolio of student work and personal work
  • A collaborative style and approachable demeanor, and demonstrated ability to establish rapport and trusting relationships with people from diverse identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effective cross-cultural communication skills. Able to operate effectively in diverse environments and interact successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including ability to interact with employees at all levels in a friendly and professional manner
