Essential Job Duties |
We are excited to invite an experienced
Tree Crew Grounds Worker to join our dedicated Landscape Maintenance and Operations team. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining the safety and health of our campus by responding to
tree safety hazards and providing expert care for the university's trees. Our
Landscape Maintenance and Operations unit is responsible for supporting the beauty and functionality of over 2,000 acres of campus landscape, offering a range of essential services including landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs, and the management of the University's auto shop and motor fleet.

Key responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:
- Operate and maintain tree-related machinery, equipment, tools, and vehicles, including chainsaws, aerial lifts, stump grinders, brush chippers, dump trucks, trailers, and pruners
- Prune and cut trees according to industry standards and as directed by the supervisor
- Perform various landscape maintenance tasks as required
- Safely drive a truck and trailer, ensuring secure transport of equipment
- Conduct regular maintenance on chainsaws, tree care machinery, and related equipment, keeping tools sharp and clean
- Respond to emergency tree care situations, including the removal of trees or limbs that have failed due to pests, disease, weather, structural issues, accidents, or other external forces
- Assist in evaluating tree varieties, durability, production, and maintenance needs, and provide routine technical and horticultural information

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school or General Educational Development (
GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver's License may be required. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Physical ability to withstand adverse weather and critical role requirement. Experience in landscaping grounds maintenance and performing tree maintenance using trade tools, machinery, and equipment, etc. Employee will work outdoors for 8 hours a day and more during a weather event. Employee will be exposed to nature's elements - sun, wind, rain, and snow, temperature extremes
- Must be able to communicate effectively written and verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in tree work and tree care. Experience working with chainsaws, aerial lifts, brush chippers, stump grinders, blowers, driving a truck and trailer, general tree and landscaping maintenance
- Ability to operate standard transmission
CDL Class B license preferred, but not required
