General Purpose of Job: Directly assist surgeon and other members of the health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. Performs observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) as delegated by the surgeon. Assists surgeon with exposure, homeostasis, positioning, volume replacement, placement of dressings and other technical functions. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Interacts with patients, visitors, professional medical staff, and office staff in a professional manner.
- Answers phone line and refers patient calls to the appropriate personnel.
- Maintains equipment and supplies, as directed, to ensure it is operational. Operates medical equipment as necessary as directed by manager.
- Maintains the standards of care and implements the policies and procedures of UMH-Sparrow Carson.
- Assists with emergency measures for sudden adverse reactions with patients.
- Assists in creating a "team" approach to patient care and the effective function of the surgical department.
- Participates in the orientation of new personnel.
- Assists in the maintenance of a clean, safe environment.
- Observes universal precautions and complies with OSHA and MIOSHA standards re: blood-borne pathogens and biohazard waste.
- Ensures economical utilization of supplies and the proper replacement thereof, in accordance with management guidelines or directives.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
- Pursues professional growth and development.
- Performs all responsibilities/duties required, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
- Functions as a role model for current and new surgical staff.
- Performs closure of surgical incisions as directed by surgeon.
- Provides assistance in room preparation, turnover, and cleanup
- Identifies surgical procedure to be performed, orders case cart from Sterile Processing, ensures necessary equipment, instrumentation, and supplies are available for procedure
- Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Provides assistance in Sterile Processing as needed.
Job Requirements
General Requirements |
* Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - OR - Tech in Surgery Certification (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) at time of hire. * Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire. |
