Medical Physicist in Chief

Summary:
Reports directly to the Hospital Chief who is also Brown University School of Medicine Chairman Department of Radiation Oncology for clinical practice teaching research and academic affairs and to the Vice President Pharmacy and Cancer Services for administrative duties and responsibilities including but not limited to operations and personnel duties and responsibilities. Conducts and participates in strategic research and development projects

which have clinical applications to radiotherapy as well as the development and maintenance of a quality assurance program for radiotherapy. Is also responsible for the acceptance and clinical implementation of new equipment. Participates in treatment planning and resolves physics aspects of treatment problems. Provides oversight for medical physics for coverage in Gamma Knife as required. Participates in teaching activities instructs and provides supervision to residents and students working on research projects. Division of workload will be approximately 50% clinical 20% teaching 20% research and 10% administrative

Responsibilities:
Develops and recommends short and long term goals for radiation oncology in consideration of Lifespan's mission values and key business objectives.

Maintains state-of-the-art technological expertise of sophisticated equipment used to provide all treatment modalities including but not limited to IMRT IGRT Gamma Knife and Linac based radiosurgery High Dose Rate Brachytherapy and radiofrequency ablation.

Initiates develops and researches new approaches to radiation management and quality control. Designs technical procedures for improving the delivery and reproducibility of prescribed radiation doses. Writes scientific papers and makes presentations regarding progress results and applications of research. Supervises Brown University students working on research projects.

Provides new capital equipment recommendations.

Consults with physicians physicists dosimetrists and radiotherapists regarding the planning and application of treatment. Reviews treatment plans to assure adequate dose to tumor and acceptable dose to related problems. Evaluates and resolves discrepancies and other physics related problems.

Consults with computer personnel to develop and design treatment programs. Advises therapists on treatment methods.

Participates in and oversees all brachytherapy procedures including HDR treatment planning and delivery.

Reviews charts performs complex dosimetry and evaluates and resolves discrepancies.

Calibrates accelerators and performs quality control tests on a regular basis to maintain quality of radiotherapy administered.

Teaches medical radiation physics to medical students and residents and participates in ongoing educational programs.

Participates in scientific meetings to exchange information enhance professional expertise and gain national recognition. Provides consultation in other areas of medical physics if requested.

Interviews hires manages and completes performance evaluations for physicists dosimetrists and radiation therapists staff. As appropriate takes necessary corrective

action including recommending discharge of staff. Ensures staff are properly trained in

pertinent functions including but not limited to development and maintenance of effective customer relations maintenance of patient confidentiality. Ensures that established policies and procedures are observed. Provides resources for the training of new staff on policies procedures and technology.

Participation in and ensures the participation of physicists dosimetrists and radiation therapists in hospital and departmental quality improvement patient satisfaction patient safety and other hospital initiatives as they may arise.

Organizes ongoing continuing educational activities for physicians medical physicists faculty resident physicians therapists and other departmental support staff and students.

Evaluates new technologies and provides recommendations to theChief Department of Radiation Oncology Vice President Pharmacy and Cancer Services and other appropriate Lifespan management as requested with regard to future implementation in order to enhance clinical services of Rhode Island Hospital.

Ensures that performance and competency of employees are in concert with departmental standards. Responsible for orientation of new employees development and implementation of in-service training programs for incumbent staff to help ensure consistency of process consistency of service and overall quality of physics staff. Collaborates with the Lifespan Learning Center to develop new training programs designed to meet departmental needs.

Responsible for ensuring the department is appropriately staffed at all times in a manner that supports evolving department and hospital needs. Ensures that employee attendance is tracked and that the hospital attendance and sick policies are administered

consistently.

Responsible for development of and timely update of departmental policies .

Performs research that can be submitted for peer review publication and pursues research funding to support the academic development of medical physicians at Rhode Island Hospital and the Brown University School of Medicine.

Makes recommendations for department budget process.

Ensures compliance with human resource policies and relevant organized labor contracts.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Completion of Doctorate degree in physics or medical physics and/or 10 years* experience in Radiation Oncology Physics.

Board certification in Radiation Oncology Physics Therapeutic Radiological Physics or equivalent is required.

Analytical ability to design develop and evaluate research and development projects to analyze and resolve problems.

Technical and advanced numerical ability to calibrate machinery perform complex dosimetry etc.

Interpersonal skills to teach and supervise students and to interact synergistically with other members of professional staff.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Progressively more responsible leadership and management experience preferably gained in a similarly diverse and operationally complex academic medical center.

At least five to ten years teaching experience in field.

Applied and basic research skills with experience applying for and obtaining substantial grant funding.

Published in peer-reviewed literature.

Have academic qualifications and experience sufficient to qualify for a full-time faculty appointment at Brown University School of Medicine at the level of Associate to Full Professor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Exposed to low-level radiation. Wears badge to monitor exposure. Travels to sites of scientific meetings and conferences.
