Roo Advising

Job Description

The Division of Student Success at UMKC is looking for a Student Support Specialist (Case Manager) to join our Roo Advising Team of professional staff. The Specialist will utilize an intrusive model to assist and support students who have struggled academically to return to good academic standing.

Roo Advising is UMKC's centralized advising model. Roo Advising is a proactive, personalized, and comprehensive advising experience designed to ensure students understand the requirements for their chosen degree programs and have a clear path to graduation. Roo Advising is comprised of five (5) Major Academic Paths:

* Arts & Cultural Studies: Art History, Communication Studies (Film and Media emphasis), English, Film and Media Arts, Languages and Literatures (Classical, French, International Studies, Spanish) and Studio Art

* Exploratory/FLEX: Undecided and Visiting Non-Degree

* Human Behavior, Education & Justice: Communication Studies, Criminal Justice and Criminology, Economics, History, Liberal Arts, Philosophy, Political Sciences, Psychology, and Sociology (Anthropology).

* Business & Management: Accounting and Business Administration.

* Numbers, Engineering, Technology & the Cosmos: Earth and Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics (Astronomy), Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Urban Planning and Design and Urban Studies

* Natural & Health Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences and Nursing, and Pre-Professional Health and Law Programs

The Student Support Specialist will be under the Exploratory/FLEX MAP and will work with students across all MAP areas.

The successful applicant will prioritize the staff-student relationship and will work proactively to provide guidance and support for students to make informed choices to reach their goals and complete their degree with maximum efficiency and success. In addition, the applicant will have a strong commitment to professional development, utilizing the resources and programming made available to continue to build skills and gain knowledge related to this career path. Lastly, the Student Support Specialist will live UMKC's Culture of Care and uphold our Statement of Values through their advising practice and interactions not only with students but by extension to all members of our UMKC Community.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Building Rapport and Trust: Prioritize establishing strong, trusting relationships with students to foster open communication and support-seeking behavior.

* Conducting intake assessments to identify students' needs and challenges.

* Developing Individualized Support Plans: Create personalized support plans tailored to the unique needs, goals, and developmental stages of students. These plans shall be created in collaboration with students.

* Providing ongoing guidance and support to help students navigate academic and personal challenges.

* Facilitating referrals to appropriate campus resources, such as Success Coach, Academic Advisor, tutoring centers, counseling services, Basic Needs Coordinator and financial aid offices.

* Promoting Cultural Responsiveness: Recognize and address the diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences of students through culturally responsive practices that foster inclusivity and equity.

* Empowering Student Ownership: Empower students to take ownership of their academic and personal growth by cultivating self-awareness, resilience, and self-efficacy through targeted support and guidance.

* Regular and ongoing monitoring of students' progress and adjusting support plans as needed.

* Stay current with research and best practices in advising, student development, and intervention strategies to inform their work effectively.

* Manage a caseload assignment of up to 150 students

* Maintain accurate and timely advising notes, regularly monitor and respond to early alert notifications in consultation with the students' academic unit, success coaches, academic advisor and MAP Manager

* Understand academic standing, satisfactory academic progress, GPA adjustments, and academic recovery protocols to assist students facing academic challenges and working to return to good standing

* Ensure compliance with confidentiality and privacy regulations while maintaining accurate records of meetings, progress, and interventions

* Provide feedback to the academic institution on the effectiveness of probationary support programs

* Attend team meetings, Advisor Resources and Training (ART), Campus Advising Partnership (CAP) and other related trainings/meeting as required or requested

* Participate and contribute to the scholarship and service of advising to Roo Advising, UMKC, and to partners locally, nationally and globally

* Participate and contribute committee service to support Roo Advising (required) and UMKC as elected or requested.

* This position may include support to or instruction with University 100-Academic Development

* Other duties as assigned

Shift

The Student Support Specialist must be available for walk-in advising and scheduled individual and group advising appointments. Work hours may include in-person and virtual advising sessions scheduled during normal business hours and up to 4 evening hours per month. The Specialist may also be asked to assist with Summer Orientation during the months of June and July and may require occasional weekend work. In addition, specialist must be able to monitor and respond to UMKC Connect (Starfish) early alert notifications and provide additional support as needed. Specialists are eligible for consideration for remote (telework) days and flexible scheduling after successful completion of a six (6) month probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred. Social Work background highly desired. 1 - 3 years of experience in student services, academic advising, case management, or learning specialist desirable.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$46,000 - $51,000 per year commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
