As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking a Grounds Manager to promote Marian University's Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by working closely with the Director of Campus Operations and Facilities to maintain the beauty of the university grounds and outdoor spaces.

General Statement of Job:



  • The successful Grounds Manager will ensure the visible excellence of the campus grounds, including central campus and outlying areas.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Manage the administrative and personnel activities of the landscape maintenance crews
  • Supervise service staff which includes interviewing, selection, and training, as well as planning, scheduling, and inspecting work
  • Provide recommendations for salaries/promotions as well as terminations
  • Administer work budgets and approve expenditures to complete job assignments
  • Assist in establishing and recommending organizational policies, procedures, and goals to carry out functions of the department
  • Model and promote excellence in customer service, stewardship, environmental sustainability, fiscal efficiency, and safety
  • Leads a team that provides operational expertise in services while providing hands on execution management of Operation.
  • Builds, develops, and leads a staff capable of carrying out organizational objectives.
  • Manages compliance with all local state and federal regulation and codes and maintains all associated records and reports
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Responsible for daily monitoring mechanical of equipment: power mowers, saws, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, sprayers
  • May be required to operate trucks, tractors, and attachments used to maintain grounds as needed
  • Collects data for preparing estimates, labor hours, expenses, and other metrics
  • Acts as liaison between departments, customers, clients, employees, and subcontractors
  • Conduct and attend meetings to communicate top down, and bottom up on a consistent real time basis, with customers, clients, and employees
  • Responsible for managing and adhering to University grounds and landscape budget.
  • Assists with plans, budgets, and schedule modifications including cost estimates bid sheets and contracts
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Demonstrated accuracy, thoroughness, and quality of work.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed work ethic
  • Ability to identify and problem solve in an effective manner
  • Must be able to utilize data to inform and implement decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees and leadership


Required Qualifications:



  • College diploma or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have and be able to maintain a valid Indiana Driver's License without restrictions.
  • Previous experience in grounds keeping/horticulture required
  • Must be able to work independently with limited supervision
  • Working knowledge of grounds keeping principals and power landscape equipment
  • Must be able to adhere to safety procedures to do physical risks
