Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Fuel Cycle Science and Technology group is seeking outstanding students interested in nuclear waste management. The intern will have an opportunity to work as part of an interdisciplinary team on one or more of several projects. This team works a 9x80 schedule onsite at our Idaho Falls campus.


These projects include:

  • Development of waste management strategies for a molten salt reactor experiments
  • Analysis (criticality, dose, structural, or thermal) of new advanced reactor spent nuclear fuels (TRISO, metallic, molten-salt)
  • Analysis (criticality, dose, structural, or thermal) of legacy DOE-managed spent nuclear fuels in storage, transportation, and/or disposal configurations
  • Design work for packaging legacy DOE-managed spent nuclear fuels for storage, transportation, and/or disposal


The student will be encouraged to develop a poster and or technical paper documenting their work from the internship for possible use in technical conferences and public forums.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:

  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university: Undergraduate Junior - Senior/ Masters Degree Program/ Doctorate Degree Program
  • Seeking Degree in: Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average
  • Possess authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Have the ability to pass a background check
  • Current Resume or CV
  • Unofficial Transcripts (include current and completed degree programs)


INL Internships Overview:

INL is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's mission in nuclear energy research, science, and national defense. Interns will spend the first week of their assignment working with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resources for a successful internship. For the next several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance and mentorship to the intern. In addition to regular activities, interns are encouraged to attend weekly seminars, tours and community events crafted with career development in mind.

Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and the selected candidates will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.

Undergraduate Internships ($25.65/hour-$30.70/hour) / Masters Internships and PhD Internships Pre-Candidacy ($31.75/hour-$34.06/hour) / PhD Internships Post Candidacy ($33.75/hour-$36.06/hour)
