Position Highlights

The University of Arizona, Campus Health Serivce's (CHS) Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS) is seeking a full-time, fiscal yea (12 month), Arizona licensed or license eligible mental health clinician (LCSW, LPC, LMFT) to provide mental health triage, brief individual and group counseling, support groups, workshops, referral, consultation, outreach, and crisis services to UA undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, with a particular focus on Black students. This position will be a site-based role within the African American Student Affairs (AASA) Cultural Center. Position requires some evening hours and occasional weekend duties.

Duties & Responsibilities

This position, along with
five other Cultural Center Site-Based positions, were created and funded by the
University of Arizona Executive Office of the President in part, as response to
a list of demands created by the Coalition of Black Students and Allies (COBA) CHS
Diversity The Site-Based counselors
work closely with the entire CAPS and Cultural Center staff, as well as
interfacing with the Campus Health Service (CHS) medical team, the Dean of
Students Office, Housing and Residential Life, faculty, families, other campus
departments and community entities. The other Site-Based Cultural and Resource
Center positions include: APASA (Asian Pacific American Student Affairs), DCC
(Disability Cultural Center), LGBTQ+ RC (LGBTQ+ Resource Center), NASA (Native
American Student Affairs), and the Adalberto & Ana Guerrero Student Center
(GSC, Hispanic/Latina-o-x student support).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling and consultation services as an embedded counselor within AASA to Black and other underrepresented students.
  • Assess and summarize ongoing Black undergraduate, graduate, and professional student needs.
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct outreach programming, campus trainings and workshops to students, faculty and staff, particularly focused on the needs of Black and other underrepresented students.
  • Provide psychological evaluation, risk assessment, crisis management, and brief treatment to UA students (individuals, couples, groups).
  • Maintain clinical records in compliance with ethics, law, and best practices.
  • Work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary campus-based health and mental health team that provides direct clinical services to enrolled UA students.
  • Provide consultation to AASA staff, families, UA faculty, staff, administrators, and CHS medical providers.
  • Provide multicultural outreach to diverse campus groups and strengthen connections with diversity partners on campus including Dean of Students, Housing & Residential Life, and CHS.
  • Utilize relevant information technology.
  • Attend and participate in regular CAPS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service/professional development training.
  • Attend Cultural Center staff meetings as needed.
  • Participate in relevant CHS/CAPS and University committees, as assigned.
  • Provide all services in a manner which is professional, culturally sensitive, and respectful of differences.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Excellent grasp of psychopathology and diagnostic systems.
  • Knowledge about the specific developmental, mental health, and academic concerns of Black students.
  • Evidence of strong self-awareness of how one's own identities and life experiences impact their counseling strategies and interactions with students.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Knowledge/expertise in one or more of the following intersectional areas: working with LGBTQIA+, international students, low income, first generation, undocumented, DACA students, or students with mixed status family.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education/the workplace.
  • Enthusiastic and innovative approach to college mental health.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to racial trauma, racial battle fatigue, and commitment to anti-racism.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population of clients presenting with a broad range of clinical needs.
  • Utilizes a holistic approach to care including experience with incorporating relevant spiritual traditions, healing practices, and cultural traditions.
  • Proficiency to conduct therapy services in languages other than English.
  • Sensitivity and commitment to working with clients of other
    ethnically/racially diverse backgrounds, individuals representing
    varying gender identities and sexual orientations, international
    students, students with multiple intersecting identities, and working
    cross-culturally.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in an applied mental health field (e.g., Social Work or Counseling) from an accredited institution.
  • Current Independent Licensure (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, etc.) in the State of Arizona, in good standing. If licensed at the Associate level, ability to submit for full independent licensure within 6 months of hire.
  • 5 years work experience in the behavioral health field and/or providing services to marginalized and/or underserved populations.
  • Experience working with the specific developmental, mental health, and academic concerns of Black students.
Preferred Qualifications

  • If independently licensed (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, etc.) in another state, then the ability to attain Arizona independent licensure within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience partnering effectively and collegially on an interdisciplinary team in a university counseling center or other mental health agency.
  • Experience 1 year working in university mental health, including crisis assessment and management, mental health triage, brief psychotherapy, and referrals.
  • Experience utilizing an electronic health record.
  • Experience in utilizing a brief therapy model of care.
