Job Description

General Summary:

The Sterile Processing Education Specialist influences professional role competence and professional growth of learners in a variety of settings. The Sterile Processing Education Specialist supports lifelong learners in an inter-professional environment that facilitates continuous development and learning for the healthcare team.

The Sterile Processing Education Specialist collaborates with the Sterile Processing Departments, Infection Prevention and Control and the Nursing Professional Development Practitioners to ensure proper sterile processing education and competency for the entire organization. Promotes and supports continuing education needs and certification requirements of the department. Assists in standardization of sterile processing education across the organization including team member training, development of policy and procedures, and annual competencies. This position is responsible for documentation and record maintenance for all team member competencies in the Sterile Processing Department.

Shift: Day hours Monday-Friday/ 10-hour shifts are allowed but must be on site at least 4 days per week. Some travel to satellite clinics required.

Hours: 7am-5pm 4 days per week or 7am-3pm M-F

Essential Job Functions:

  • Oversees program development function that includes assessment, research, training design, training delivery and evaluation of or orientation, training, continuing education as well as customized solutions to enhance organizational effectiveness while supporting continuous learning, inquiry and dialogue, collaborative and team learning.

  • Designs, implements, and coordinates education integrating competencies and annual training across the organization.

  • Provide educational opportunities to support certification with CBSPD (Certification Board of Sterile Processing & Distribution) and IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management).

  • Facilitates individual, team and organizational performance management that include competency development and evaluation, change management processes, work and accountability processes, performance consultation and mentoring staff, and development of job/performance aids.

  • Facilitates knowledge management function to develop employee's ability to learn, adapt and change swiftly as new technology emerges and clinical practice evolves. Services include developing systems to capture and share learning quickly and efficiently throughout the organization as a subject matter expert. This includes driving policy and procedure changes, developing learning resources and implementing learning transfer strategies.

  • Provides services to improve the delivery of service that includes facilitating quality and safety initiatives, establishing standards of practice and documentation standards and providing direct service on site training.

  • Demonstrates value of professional development to the healthcare environment through return on investment, enhances quality of care, and improved patient outcomes considering factors related to quality, safety, effectiveness and cost.

  • Actively works to transform processes at the organizational level, utilizing project management and improvement processes.

  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science or Business Administration Degree required.

  • Experience: Four years in a healthcare related field; supervisory or educator role experience required.

  • Licensure, Registry or Certification Required: Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from either Certification Board of Sterile Processing & Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) required.

  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Comprehensive knowledge of sterile processing, HLD and familiarity with daily operations in surgical services.

  • Program lead in continuing education programs specific to Sterile Processing.
