These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL's broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.We are currently seeking qualified applicants for a Group Leader of the Material Security and Counterproliferation (MSC) Group in the Materials Characterization and Modeling Section within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND). The NND is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at ORNL. A key mission of the NND is delivery of R&D needed to improve the protection of nuclear materials and fuel cycle technology and prevent the theft, diversion, and illicit use of those materials or technologies, while at the same time allowing for their peaceful use in the global arena. The division is responsible for a range of expertise, facilities, and equipment and applies these combined assets to address R&D and operational challenges related to nonproliferation, safeguards, treaty verification, counterproliferation, and global nuclear security. The division activities also play a vital role in implementation of national policy issues that strive to ensure global nuclear security. The MSCGroup is comprised of recognized leaders focusing on research, development, and application of technologies related to identifying, minimizing, and/or addressing risks or potential threats associated with production or use of special nuclear material (SNM). Our expertise includes removal of SNM in foreign countries, nuclear reactor modeling for nonproliferation, nuclear material forensics, nuclear materials assessments, and counterproliferation. Nuclear Reactor Modeling - modeling of current and emerging nuclear reactor designs for nonproliferation application using the most state-of-the-art nuclear power reactor modeling tools. Nuclear Forensics - pre-detonation nuclear forensic science mission execution by coordinating domestic material sampling, analysis, and preservation as the lead lab for the National Nuclear Materials Achieve (NNMA). Nuclear Material Science - assessment of attractiveness of SNM forms through the application of material science studies. Counterproliferation - developing and accessing counterproliferation measures for SNM production processes. Foreign Nuclear Material Recovery - supports the removal of special nuclear material from foreign countries. We3 support a variety of offices within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) with a focus on NA-20 and NA-80 as well as other government agencies.As part of our team, the successful candidate will lead the MSC Group comprised of staff who are recognized leaders focusing on research, development, and application of technologies related to nuclear nonproliferation, material security, and counterproliferation.
