Director, Adult Gender Affirming Medicine

JOB SUMMARY:

This position requires completion of an NP, PA, MD, or DO program with accompanying board certification and active licensure to practice medicine in Maryland.

Compensation is commensurate with licensure

In collaboration with the Executive Director and staff of The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity (LHEC), the Chief Medical Officer, and the MVC Site Medical Director, the Director of Gender-Adult Affirming Medicine will provide leadership and coordination for the development and implementation of health care for our transgender and gender-diverse patients. Duties include direct clinic and administrative service and programmatic and oversight duties. Clinically, this position provides direct trans-related medical care, as well as primary care to trans and gender-diverse patients. Non-clinical duties include working across CBHC departments to establish effective access to services, establishing best medical practices for hormone treatment, providing ongoing medical provider training, providing quality-control/chart review for gender-affirming care, and collaborating with LHEC staff to develop and maintain gender-affirming community relationships. This position will work closely with medical and behavioral health providers, pharmacy, transgender care navigators, and case managers to ensure that the full continuum of care needs of our transgender clients are identified and that appropriate services are accessed, coordinated, and monitored.

This position will serve as a Medical Director for the gender-affirming care specialty service and report clinically to the Site Medical Director in MVC, with additional oversight by the LHEC for programmatic responsibilities.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Focus

* Provides leadership and coordination of care for our transgender patients across a team of medical providers (MD/DO, NP, PA) and support teams.

* Seek, develop, and grow relationships within other departments of Chase Brexton to create new services and supports for trans patients

* Assures patients receive education and informed consent regarding hormone treatment and potential side effects

* Coordinates and ensures effective clinical appointment access and flow of care between departments and teams

Compliance, Policy, and Procedure

* Establishes "best practices" for medical trans care, including the development and/or revision of clinical protocols, and ensuring standards are being met through rigorous chart review, required ongoing staff training, and peer evaluation.

* Ensures clinical competency and appropriateness of clinical staff providing gender-affirming care to Chase Brexton patients and community members

Communication

* Provides trainings, both internally and externally, on issues relative to providing effective trans care and issues relative to cultural competency.

* Coordinates communication and integration across all clinical services and programs in collaboration with LHEC ED, and /or Chief Medical Officer as indicated.

* Provides consultation across CBHC for trans-targeted services and publications

* Provides approved and contracted consultation to external organizations, training medical staff about creating an open and affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ patients

* Provide State advocacy, as needed and approved

Analytical and Critical Thinking

* Locate and/or develop and continually revise educational materials

* Coordinates evaluations and referrals of trans people for the appropriate clinical services

* Identify research and funding opportunities related to trans care as appropriate

* Provides hormone treatment and primary care to trans-identified patients, and general walk-in or primary medical care to other patients on an as-needed basis.

Checking, Examining, and Recording

* Coordinates with the LHEC staff to track and report relevant utilization and quality indicators/statistics, as indicated

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

* Ability to work effectively and respectfully as part of a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse staff

* Ability to build and maintain effective relationships

* Ability to develop, initiate and maintain clinical programs

* Ability to coordinate, organize and remain flexible

* Ability to manage and help develop staff roles and opportunities

* Knowledge of hormone treatment and primary care needs of transgender people

* Knowledge of LGBTQ issues

* Knowledge of HIV and common co-morbidities, as well as sexually transmitted infections, trauma-based care, and social determinants of health

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

* Required: Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Maryland

* Required: Completion of an accredited NP, PA, MD, or DO training program and related board certification

* Experience in providing LGBTQ health care required, including trans-specific care and HIV.

* Expertise in trans care preferred.

* Experience with public speaking and providing professional training.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed in an office environment and primarily housed at one location, but with periodic required travel between clinic locations and to community events.
