JOB TITLE: Avalanche Mitigation Technician

DIVISION: Mountain Operations

REPORTS TO: Mountain Operations Manager

LOCATION: On Mountain

CLASSIFICATION: Full Time / Season to Season

OVERVIEW: This is a mostly non- supervisory position that will be responsible for a wide variety of mountain operations. The position involves both field 90%, and office work 10%. The Avalanche Mitigation Technician reports directly to the Avalanche Mitigation Manager and the Avalanche Mitigation Assistant Manager. This position requires strong interpersonal relationship skills as well as an expert skiing ability.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain an ATF explosive handlers permit
  • Have a valid state drivers license
  • Have a current medical certification at the Utah, National EMT or OEC level
  • Current CPR certification
  • Expert skiing ability
  • Avalanche Pro 1 certification preferred
  • 4 years ski patrol experience preferred
  • 2 years of avalanche mitigation experience at a class "A" resort
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Strong understanding of ski resort operations
  • Able to hike in steep, exposed, and technical terrain in arduous conditions with packs weighing between 40 and 60 pounds


DUTIES:

Management Responsibilities:
  • Assists in the training and of ski patrollers in avalanche rescue and mitigation techniques
  • Conducts inventories and maintains explosive caches


Avalanche Mitigation Responsibilities:
  • Assists in forecasting future trends and current levels of avalanche danger and mitigating avalanche hazards
  • Collects and documents field data on snow, weather and avalanche conditions
  • Assists in decisions determining the opening and closing of terrain based on avalanche hazard forecasts
  • Maintains and installs aerial trams and shot cables resort wide
  • Maintains and installs avalanche closure rope lines and signage
  • Assists for the setup and tear down of remote weather stations
  • The ability to lead a resort wide, mass causality avalanche rescue.
  • Able to conduct complex off premises rescues for Wasatch Backcountry Rescue


Emergency Care and Rescue responsibilities
  • To provide emergency care to those in need of assistance.
  • To provide transport from on mountain locations in expert terrain to locations in the base area via rescue sleds and snowmobiles.
  • To be proficient in lift evacuations using specialized equipment
  • To be proficient in cliff and high angle rescue
  • To be proficient in search and rescue including night operations
