JOB TITLE: Ski Patrol Supervisor
DIVISION: Mountain Operations
REPORTS TO: Ski Patrol Manager
LOCATION: Solitude Mountain Resort
CLASSIFICATION: Full time/ Seasonal/ Hourly
Wage Range: $28.88 - DOE
PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Ski Patrol Supervisor directs and supervises the Ski Patrol Department, including department performance, staffing, training, budgeting, culture, engagement, scheduling, interdepartmental relations, and guest services. Additionally, the Ski Patrol Supervisor is responsible for supervising medical aid, rope rescues, and lift evacuations. This position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to problem solve, creativity, and the ability to build a positive and high performing team.
SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years ski patrol experience (3+ years supervisory experience preferred)
- 4+ years avalanche mitigation experience (class "A" resort experience preferred)
- The incumbent must be able to obtain an ATF "employee possessor" status
- Have a valid state driver's license
- Have a current medical certification at the Utah, National EMT or OEC level
- Current CPR certification
- Expert skiing ability
- Avalanche Professional I or equivalent avalanche certification
- Strong communication, leadership, and decision-making skills
- Strong understanding of ski resort operations
- Follow resort policies and procedures as described in the Staff Handbook
- Act as a positive, professional role model, adhering to the company's standards, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of Skier Responsibility Code and Solitude Mountain Resort's Code of Conduct
- Ability to perform essential job functions in various types of terrain and weather
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Management Responsibilities
- Fills in for Ski Patrol Manager, as assigned
- Assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of the Ski Patrol Department
- Assist in disciplinary actions pertaining to the Ski Patrol Department
- Assist in the creation and support of the Ski Patrol Department's fiscal budget
- Schedule daily assignments for patrollers
- Supervise and lead daily operations of the Ski Patrol Department, including mountain setup, emergency response, and closing procedures including on mountain set up, emergency response, and closing procedures
- Assists in office duties such as scheduling, payroll, and budgeting
- Supervises medical equipment inventory, maintenance, and ordering
- Supervise 1Risk electronic reporting and dispatch system
- Act as incident commander, when necessary, on and off company premises
- Daily communication, planning, and preparation with Avalanche Mitigation Manager, Ski Patrol Manger, and Ski Patrol Director
- Maintain professional relationships with partnering agencies and other Solitude departments
- Assists in accident investigations and incident reporting
- Develop and train employees in all skills pertaining to ski patrol and mountain rescue
- Other duties as may be assigned
Risk Management:
- Evaluate mountain conditions for hazards and take appropriate steps to mitigate possible hazards
- Evaluate mountain facilities for hazards and take appropriate steps to mitigate such hazards
- Evaluate and supervise the emergency care rendered by ski patrol
- Participates in decision making for terrain openings and closures
- Ensure proper signage and required rope lines are in place
- Prioritize and order supplies as necessary within budgetary restrictions
- Evaluate on mountain conditions and hazards and take appropriate steps to mitigate such hazards
- Enforce local and state ordinances as well as the skier responsibility code
- Ensure the mountain receives effective morning and afternoon sweeps
- Ensures quality of Incident Reports
Emergency Care and Rescue:
- Supervise and provide emergency care to those in need of assistance
- Supervise and provide transport to injured persons in all types of terrain via rescue sleds and snowmobiles
- Assist in coordinating and conducting lift evacuations using specialized equipment, as needed
- Assist in supervising and conducting avalanche rescues
- Assist in supervising and conducting cliff and high angle rescue
- Assist in supervising and conducting search and rescue operations including missing persons and night rescues
- Assist in supervising and conducting inter-agency rescue efforts with Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, Unified Police Department and Unified Fire Department in fluid and complex situations
- Assist in conducting Incidents Investigations, when necessary
- Other duties as may be assigned
Avalanche Mitigation Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate a working understanding of avalanches and avalanche terrain
- Participate in avalanche rescues
- Perform avalanche mitigation work as the route leader
