JOB TITLE: Avalanche Mitigation Manager
DIVISION: Mountain Operations
REPORTS TO: Director of Ski Patrol
LOCATION: Solitude Mountain Resort
CLASSIFICATION: Full-time/ Seasonal /Salary (FLSA Exempt)
Wage Range: $70,054 - DOE
PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Avalanche Mitigation Manager oversees and manages all aspects of the Avalanche Mitigation department, including but not limited to overall department performance, staffing, training, budgeting, culture, engagement, scheduling, interdepartmental relations, and guest services. Additionally, the Avalanche Mitigation Manager is responsible for managing daily avalanche mitigation efforts, as well as avalanche rescue. This position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to problem solve, creativity, and the ability to build a positive and high performing team.
SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to obtain an ATF "responsible persons" status
- Valid state driver's license.
- Current medical certification at the Utah EMT, National EMT or OEC level.
- Current CPR certification
- Expert skiing ability
- Avalanche Level III or Avalanche Pro II certification
- 10+ years ski patrol experience (4+ years supervisory experience preferred)
- 10+ years avalanche mitigation experience (preferably at class "A" resort)
- 1+ year of avalanche mitigation experience at Solitude Mountain Resort
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Strong understanding of ski resort operations
- Ability to hike in steep, exposed, and technical terrain in arduous conditions with packs weighing between 40 and 60 pounds
- Ability to recognize avalanche terrain and slide paths
- Ability to determine safe travel paths through avalanche terrain
- Modern knowledge of avalanche mitigation techniques, technologies, systems, and trainings
- Act as a positive, professional role model, adhering to the company's standards, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of Skier Responsibility Code and Solitude Mountain Resort's Code of Conduct
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Management
- Fill in for the Ski Patrol Director as assigned
- Manage the hiring and evaluation of the Avalanche Mitigation Department
- Manage disciplinary actions pertaining to the Avalanche Mitigation Department
- Manages scheduling of avalanche mitigation and daily mitigation assignments
- Manage Avalanche Mitigation Department's staffing, payroll, and budgeting
- Manage avalanche rescue and mitigation technique trainings and evaluations
- Document training, equipment assignments, and equipment condition
- Inventory explosives and maintain explosive caches
- Maintain all records in accordance with applicable law and company policy
- Maintain an adequate number of explosives and mitigation related supplies
- Coordinate with other departments for training and equipment needs related to avalanche rescue
- Coordinate with other departments regarding travel routes based on avalanche hazard
- Maintain avalanche mitigation supplies and equipment in good working order.
- Assist in managing rescue operations both in and out of ski area boundaries
- Assist in managing Solitude's Avalanche Rescue Dog Program
- Assist in managing WBR relations and affiliations
- Other duties as may be assigned
Avalanche Mitigation
- Forecast future trends and current levels of avalanche danger
- Mitigate avalanche hazards
- Assign mitigation route leaders and followers
- Manage the collection and documentation of field data on snow, weather, and avalanche conditions
- Determine the opening and closing of terrain based on avalanche hazard forecasts
- Determine placement for aerial trams and shot cables resort wide
- Determine location and oversee maintenance of avalanche closure rope lines and signage
- Able to lead a resort wide, mass causality avalanche rescue.
- Able to conduct and coordinate complex off premises rescues for Wasatch Backcountry Rescue
- Demonstrate a thorough understating and troubleshooting capabilities of Campbell Scientific remote measurement systems
- Manage the setup and tear down of remote weather stations
- Manage Solitude's weather database.
- Maintain relations with Utah Avalanche Center, United States Forest Service, National Weather Service, and other agencies.
- Manage the Wyssen tower network
- Other duties as may be assigned
