Position Summary

The Director of Professional Development is responsible for strategic and operational direction and leadership in assessing, designing/planning, implementing, and evaluating activities and quality outcomes of all Professional Development services and educational programs for Saddleback Medical Center including all key stakeholders involved in these programs. Professional Development services includes the planning of continuing education programs with oversight for the Board of Registered Nursing continuing education provider license, clinical laboratory science continuing education accrediting agency license, and ASRT institution continuing education provider license; on-site specialty training programs (Simulation , patient care assistant/technician, Clinical Supervisors, Safe Patient Handling, HELP, others); off-site specialty training program support to include MHS classes for MHS Nurse Leadership Academy, MHS EBP Fellowship, , Preceptor and Mentor programs, Management of Assaultive Behavior; all centralized nursing orientation programs to include new graduate nurse programs; management of the American Heart Association RQI program for BLS, ACLS and PALS certifications, with additional oversight of NRP programs. Preparation and support for student clinical rotations and preceptorship placement. Facilitates professional development and advancement program (MHS title: APPLS) participation and program growth Direct management and supervision of the Professional Development clinical educators s, ensuring all educators and trainers are appropriately oriented to the services and programs of Professional Development; accountable for ensuring standards of nursing practice, state scope of practice and applicable regulatory guidelines are adhered to and appropriately taught in all programs under the Professional Development realm (examples include evidence-based practice, BPT information dissemination, , and standardized nursing procedures and clinical policy or procedure development. All programs must meet high quality standards and comply with applicable law, regulation and accreditation standards (Title 22, OSHA, Joint Commission, etc.). . Intranet support via training and publishing support for all web pages, screensavers or forms. . This position is responsible for the on-line learning management system including SumTotal (MHS title: YouLearn) and Online Nursing Skills (MHS title; Elsevier)and its content, support to its users, development of Admins or Instructors to manage the system, deliver online instruction for initial, ongoing and on-demand training and functions as the Administrative representative for the campus. Additionally, this position is responsible for overseeing the American Nurse's Credentialing Centers Magnet program standards are being met.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  • Formulates all clinical and non-clinical education program design relying on theory-based principles and adult learning theory.
  • Incorporates LEAN principles in all aspect's operation of department as well as in development of education programs for the organization.
  • Formulates and develops strategies to implement training programs and evaluates them as necessary to meet program or organizational goals.
  • Facilitates colleges/universities with affiliation agreements to ensure successful acclimation to the hospital environment for nearly 400 students annually representing Saddleback via the OCLB Nursing Consortium.
  • Designs competency validation processes for identified groups to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards and quality of care initiatives in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Coordinates and approves all continuing education units for nursing, laboratory and Radiology service continuing education.
  • Oversees the policy/procedure/standardize procedure approvals process.
  • Designs measurable tools to evaluate achievement of education, quality and safety goals for all education programs.
  • Designs and publicizes marketing tools to engage staff and the community in educational and informational events. Supports the development of the Saddleback M-Connect Intranet as a primary communication to staff, physicians and volunteers.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of healthcare issues, change theory, adult learning theory, group process, clinical service development, professional nursing/other clinical discipline issues, continuous performance improvement capabilities, facilitation, and remains current in practices that relate to working within an acute care hospital environment.
  • Advocates for Professional Development services and programs, through participation in leadership councils and organizational committees, to ensure program success and acquisition of necessary resources, etc.
  • Represents the Saddleback Medical Center in MHS - wide education initiatives such as the Education VAT, MHS Nursing Research & EBP Council, APPLS Oversight, CNO VAT, and other requested councils/committees.
  • Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary partners to facilitates Age-Friendly designation and program spread for MHS.
  • Manages and coordinates product implementation and evaluation at Saddleback Medical Center.
  • Supports department directors and managers with education needs to ensure regulatory / specialty program compliance (i.e. Total Joint Program, Stroke Program, etc.) and implementation of best practices.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:



  • Minimum of 5 years recent acute care hospital experience required


Education/Licensure/Certification:



  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's or doctorate degree preferred
