What's in it for you:

The Sensor Technology Group, part of Ecolab's Global Sensors and Equipment Group, has an opening for a Principal Sensor Engineer focused on new sensor development and sensor technology leadership.The successful candidate must have a background in Experimental Physics or related field (see below) and an advanced understanding of the full life cycle of a sensor - from ideation through development. This role requires expertise in characterization of novel sensors and control systems. This role will lead strategy and execution for R&D initiatives supporting sensor and automation development for chemical dispensing and monitoring, within multiple divisions and applications within Ecolab.

In addition, a demonstrated ability to manage projects is required. The Sensors Engineer will work in multi-disciplinary teams across Ecolab RD&E to solve difficult problems. Cross-functional collaboration will be leveraged to provide Sensor solutions for our customers. Efforts in research and development, manufacturing, intellectual property, and regulatory will be supported. Strong communicators with a results-driven orientation and a background in Experimental Physics or developing sensors are encouraged to apply.

What you will do:

  • Understand and assess sensing requirements and applications from the businesses divisional segments

  • Develop sensing solutions to meet Ecolab's product requirements and customer needs with either internally developed technology or integrated commercially available sensor technologies

  • Research and demonstrate the feasibility of new technologies to meet or improve product sensing solutions

  • Build and test sensing prototypes in the lab and field environments to rapidly assess feasibility and suitability for use

  • Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand needs and to develop new sensor-enabled products

  • Document and publish research results, both written and through presentations and demonstrations

  • Effectively communicate sensing technology tradeoffs (cost, accuracy, power, etc.) and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in applied / experimental physics, engineering, optical science, or related field

  • Bachelor's degree + 5 years of experience, or Master's degree + 3 years of experience, or PhD

  • Experience developing performance metrics for the evaluation of sensor systems

  • Understanding of signal conditioning for sensors in embedded applications

  • Experience with innovative and creative solution generation and reduction to practice

  • Experience building and testing sensors and/or sensing system prototypes

  • Data analytics as it applies to performance and sensing system characterization

  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to variety of audiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Applied or Experimental Physics, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Science and Engineering, Physical or Analytical Chemistry, or related field; and 2+ years of post-graduate work experience in Research and Development

  • Ability to develop prototypes with microcontroller platforms such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi

  • Cross-functional team leadership or demonstrated ability to manage teams

  • Project management experience

  • Experience with integrated Machine Learning/Data Science

  • Experience with manufactured embedded products

  • Analytical instrumentation development
