The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Graduate programs are offered with specialties in Computing and Systems, Construction Engineering, Water Resources, Coastal and Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, Transportation Systems and Materials, Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Engineering, and Mechanics and Materials.
With over 53 faculty, more than 770 undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students, NC State University's Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (
CCEE) is one of the largest departments in the country and more importantly, one of the best. In 2022, our Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering degrees were ranked at 21st and 26th in the country, respectively.
At the graduate level we offer the traditional Master's and Ph.D. degrees with the opportunity to specialize in a wide range of topics in civil, construction, and environmental engineering. Essential Job Duties |
The Research Technician will oversee the comprehensive management of samples designated for the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (
PFAS) using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Key responsibilities include:
Sample Management:
Tracking and Coordination: Implement and maintain a system to track and manage all samples, ensuring seamless coordination with other personnel and labs on campus involved in the analysis. Sample Extraction: Perform sample extraction for PFAS using established procedures, while adapting to evolving methodologies as directed by faculty supervisors.
Data Management:
Data Review: Receive and review large volumes of data, ensuring quality control samples meet specifications. Identify potential problems such as samples requiring dilution. Data Organization: Screen and organize data for reporting purposes, maintaining accuracy and consistency.
Supply Management:
Chemicals and Supplies: Manage and maintain necessary chemicals and supplies to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
The samples will primarily be generated by researchers in the environmental engineering lab, with occasional contributions from other campus researchers. The role requires close collaboration and communication with these researchers to ensure efficient sample handling and data processing.

- Ability to follow, modify, and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance laboratory processes and efficiency.
- Expertise in preparing and evaluating quality control plans to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analytical results.
- Proficiency in maintaining analytical standards to ensure consistent and precise measurement in all tests and analyses.
- Effective management of consumables and inventory, ensuring the availability of necessary supplies and the proper disposal of laboratory waste.
- Familiarity with EPA Draft Method 1633 for the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines and standards.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with all lab personnel, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, taking the initiative to complete tasks without supervision when necessary.
- Strong time-management skills to accommodate scheduled testing and the flexibility to adjust to unscheduled testing as required.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Some experience in a wet chemistry lab.
- Relevant coursework may count for experience.
- Understanding of principles related to sample extraction and clean-up.
- Experience with extractions of trace organic chemicals from complex environmental matrices.
- Experience with data management and statistical software.
