Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the
UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and
UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load. Cogeneration Systems is part of
UNC Energy Services. |
Position Summary |
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $5,838 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,919 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,919 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This recruitment is for two (2) Electronics Specialist positions. By applying, you will be considered for both positions: 20066165, 20065891.
This position provides an intermediate (journeyman) skill set in Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical (IC&E). The skill set level for this position allows one to work independently on less complicated equipment and systems or with minimal instruction and direction from Superintendent and/or Advanced-level Technicians. This position is responsible for the installation, preventive, predictive, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of the boilers, all associated balance of plant auxiliary equipment and fuel handling systems. (Examples: PLC's,
CDS,
VFD, VDS's, plant electrical systems consisting of 12.47kV, 4.16kV, 2.3kV, 480V and 120/280V, 480V motor control centers,
CEMS, scientific analyzers for the water chemistry, steam turbine and diesel generator voltage regulators and governor control systems, electrical protective relaying). This position provides an intermediate (journeyman) skill set in the electrical, instrumentation and control circuitry on equipment and systems. (Examples: Instrument air, fans, pumps, valves, control valves, mills, cooling towers, fluid drives, air compressors water treatment systems, bag houses, fuel handling systems, stack lights and railroad crossing signals). This position requires a fundamental understanding of said systems, equipment, and components. This position will perform minimal program modifications, revise control graphics and tune PLC's /
DCS digital and analog control loops. It will also allow for development, modification and implementation of daily reports on the
DCS. With appropriate training, this position is expected to become conversant with the
EPA and
DAQ regulatory requirements as they pertain to the
CEMS. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience in the repair and maintenance in a variety of electrical/electronic equipment or systems. Must operate state vehicles so candidate must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license or ability to obtain prior to hire. This position must participate in rotational On-Call duty. Must have the ability to work in extreme weather conditions including extreme heat/cold, direct sun, precipitation and/or wind. Must be able to remain in a single or stationary location/position for extended periods of time. Must have ability to ascend/descend stairs in buildings without an elevator. This position will require employee(s) to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate
PPE in accordance with established procedures. This position is an Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Position. The employee in this position is designated as a Mandatory Employee. As such, it is expected to report to work or remain on the worksite, and if deemed necessary by their supervisor, to work a differing schedule or shift than normally assigned. This position is considered Communicable Disease Mandatory On-site Primary. As such, the position performs functions that are essential to the continuation of core University operations, including utilities, during a potential health emergency. |

This position supports the Cogeneration Facility and Manning Drive Steam Plant which is a continuous 24/7-365 days operation to meet the demands and maintain reliability of the University campus and
UNC Hospitals. Events that jeopardize the facility's capacity to produce steam and electricity must be correct immediately. This position has been predetermined and designated as necessary for mandatory operations. Therefore, it is an Emergency Duty, Adverse Weather and Communicable Disease Mandatory (
CDM) position. As such, it is expected to report to or remain at work during periods of adverse weather (hurricane, snow, etc.), university emergency (fire, power outage, etc.), and/or communicable disease (public health emergency, communicable disease outbreak, etc.). This position will participate in an On-Call rotation to cover after-hours and/or weekend emergencies. This position will operate state vehicles so candidate must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license or ability to obtain prior to hire. Must have the ability to work in extreme weather conditions including extreme heat/cold, direct sun, precipitation and/or wind. Must be able to remain in a single or stationary location/position (sit, stand and/or squat) for extended periods of time. Must have ability to ascend/descend stairs in buildings without an elevator. This position will require employee(s) to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate
PPE in accordance with established procedures. |
