Job Description

General Summary:

Collaborates with Director/Sr. Director within designated area of responsibility to facilitate, coordinate and clinically supervise staff functions within the medical social work team and the social work training program. As part of the Family Services leadership team, manages patient care operations and ensures the delivery of excellent patient care. Works with leadership team to create a work environment that engages staff in the attainment of department and organizational goals and vision. Actively supports continuous improvement in safety, quality, and customer service, through behavior modeling and by provision of work environment conducive to attaining these goals.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Works with the department leadership team, managing daily operations to ensure the highest quality care, patient satisfaction, regulatory compliance and patient safety.

    A) Performs routine case reviews to identify trends in service delivery and opportunities to facilitate service recovery.

    B) Develops, implements, and monitors the effectiveness of operational processes and procedures.

    C) Leads process improvement initiatives to ensure high quality outcomes.

    D) Ensures effective scheduling and staffing of staff.

    E) Oversees payroll/time reporting process ensuring proper pay for staff, compliance with policies, and approval of overtime and incentive programs.

    F) Serves as a clinical and operational resource and role model to staff.

  • Serves as a resource person, clinical expert and role model. Meets regularly with direct reports to provide other staff functions appropriate to the position. This includes providing direct clinical patient care in role of the primary clinician during designated shifts and provides shift coverage as needed.

  • Coordinates orientation schedule and activities for onboarding of newly hired medical social workers and trainees.

  • Creates a work environment that attracts, retains, and engages the highest quality staff. Addresses proactively, the issues affecting work environment. Assists in the recruitment and selection of high-quality staff.

  • Works to develop staff through coaching, mentoring and team building. Collaborates with staff development specialist and/or Clinical Educator to coordinate facilitate in-services, conferences, and other professional development opportunities for staff, and ensure orientation of new staff.

  • Ensures high standards of performance by proactively addressing performance issues, including coaching and disciplinary conversations and by feedback provided through the performance appraisal process.

  • Maintains employee human resource file for direct reports.

  • Assist director in monitoring volumes, budgeting, patient charges and variance reporting.

  • Collaborates with Director to prepare budget, monitor monthly variances, and takes action to correct and/or make recommendations for budget adjustments based on analyzed data and change in practice or trends.

  • Coordinates the social work training program for the Division of Family Services. This includes and is not limited to coordination of recruitment efforts, liaison work with schools of social work, assignment of social work interns, supervision and mentoring of social work field supervisors, coordination of all meetings & group supervisions related to the social work training program.

  • Serves as leader and guide to manage complex projects within department and organization.

  • Facilitates timely communication within department, between departments, and up/down the Lurie Children's leadership structure and with staff. Remains aware of changes occurring within the organization and acts as a communication link between staff and Lurie Children's Senior Leadership.

  • Pursues professional development opportunities and networks to enhance own professional knowledge and development.

  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers, and others.

  • The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.

  • Other job functions as assigned.

Essential Job Functions - Clinical:

  • Participates in rounds, treatment meetings, patient care conferences, staffing, multidisciplinary case conferences, etc.

  • Maintains clinical documentation in a thorough and timely manner adhering to Hospital and departmental standards.

  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Education: master's degree in social work from a university approved by the council for social work education.

  • Job Related Experience: Experience with clinical supervision and project management required. Management experience preferred. Minimum requirement of five years of social work experience.

  • Management Experience: Management experience in a social work or health care setting preferred.

  • Skills/ Knowledge: Ability to coordinate, integrate complex processes and relationships in a high-profile role. Demonstrates leadership skills by assisting and encouraging the team to participate in identification of problems, formulation of plans, and initiation of corrective measures and follow-up to make certain suitable action was taken. Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills including strong professional boundaries. Demonstrates sound judgment and reasoning skills. Ability to think proactively, act creatively, and take initiative appropriately. Spanish language abilities and skills strongly preferred.

  • Licensure: LCSW required

  • Physical Demands: Stamina and energy to maintain direct patient contact on a regular basis with seriously ill persons, to coordinate multiple demands made on time, and to fulfill on-call requirements as assigned.
