Job Description

The City of Renton's Public Works Maintenances Services department is recruiting to fill vacancies in the Streets section. The Maintenance Services Worker performs technical, and physically labor-intensive tasks in support of the Public Works Maintenance division. Work is performed independently and as part of a team. Tasks are completed with general guidelines and require some independent judgment. Contribute to the City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties. This classification is part of a series and incumbents may also perform duties at the entry and/or intermediate level.

Annual Salary:
Maintenance Services Worker 2: $64,656 - $78,804
Maintenance Services Worker 3: $71,376 - $86,988

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintenance Services Worker 2:
  • Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, weeding, planting, and pruning as well as applying specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pests.
  • Remove litter and debris from roadways and facilities and assist in the cleanup of job sites, within right-of-ways, easements, and other areas as required.
  • Assist in the excavation and rechanneling of ditches.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks.
  • Assist to maintain inventory of tools, equipment and supplies on vehicles.
  • Dig and backfill excavations manually and using light equipment.
  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, specialized equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Assist to maintain vehicle, tools and equipment in a clean, safe and proper working condition.
  • Input data for a variety of records including work orders, time records and materials use records.
  • Respond to customer questions and maintain good public relations.
  • Perform traffic control duties in high traffic conditions for co-workers, other City departments and contractors as assigned.
  • Utilize Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.

Streets Section
  • Assist in a variety of street construction projects, including building forms and mixing, pouring and finishing concrete; assist in street, pavement, sidewalk, curb and gutter construction, and repairing and painting guardrails.
  • Assist in asphalt repair and construction; demolish and prepare for street, curb, sidewalk and related construction, maintenance and repair.
Maintenance Services Worker 3:
  • Perform a variety of specialized duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets, water distribution, surface water, and wastewater facilities and systems.
  • Excavate and rechannel ditches.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks.
  • Read maps, blueprints, and schematics to locate all city owned infrastructure.
  • Dig and backfill excavations manually and using light and heavy equipment.
  • Assist in the cleanup of job sites.
  • Direct cleanup crews as assigned.
  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, specialized equipment and hand and power tools, gas detector, and forklift.
  • Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, weeding, planting, and pruning; apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects, and other pests.
  • Remove litter and debris from roadways and facilities.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies on maintenance vehicles; maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and proper working condition.
  • Input data for a variety of records including system operations, inspections, preventive maintenance and materials use records; work orders, time records, and field records.
  • Inspect facilities and systems for maintenance and repair needs; update and revise maps and diagrams of streets, pipe and manhole locations.
  • Respond to and assist with the construction and maintenance of various department needs as it relates to streets, pipeline construction, flood control, snowstorms, waste removal, manhole repair and catch basin maintenance, and flag traffic as required.
  • Operate computers, GPS survey equipment, laser levels, and software programs associated in the recording and mapping of City facilities, components, and systems.
  • Assist with trench excavation to proper survey grade and line, laying of pipe, rechanneling of ditches and other aspects of surface water and wastewater system activities as assigned.
  • Estimate of materials needed for projects.
  • Utilize Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Respond to customer complaints and inquiries.
Streets
  • Perform specialized duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets, alleys, right-of-ways, bridges, and sidewalks.
  • Prepare and perform excavation, subgrade preparation, surface treatments, paving, overlays, cold and hot patching and sealing.
  • Operate power sweepers to remove dirt and debris from City streets; flush and clean streets and sidewalks with water with the use of the appropriate best management practices.
  • Cut streets and sidewalks with specialized saws; load debris, concrete, asphalt and other waste materials into dump trucks and haul to waste sites.
  • Perform flood, snow, ice and vegetation control and removal duties and the cleanup of hazardous waste spills.
  • Operate dump and service trucks.
  • Blade and maintain road shoulders with a grader; clean and trench ditches and culverts; fabricate, repair, and maintain standard roadside.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Maintenance Services Worker 2:
  • One year construction maintenance experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • The following certificates are required within six (6) months of employment:
    • Flagging certificate
    • First aid and CPR certificates
    • Fork lift card.
  • The following certificates are required within one year of employment:
    • Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement
    • NIMS 100 and 700 Certificates
    • Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) Certificate
    • Confined Space Entry Certificate

  • Successful passing of a required background check.
  • Positions that require a CDL Class A are safety sensitive positions. Employment is contingent upon successful drug and alcohol screening and subject to random testing.
  • Maintenance Services Worker 3:
    • Two years of experience within the specific assigned maintenance services area.
    • Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement.
    • The following certificates are required within six (6) months of employment:
      • Flagging certificate
      • First aid and CPR certificates
      • Forklift card
  • The following certificates are required within one year of employment:
    • NIMS 100 and 700 Certificates
    • Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) Certificate
    • Confined Space Entry Certificate
    • Successful passing of a required background check.
    • Positions that require a CDL Class A are safety sensitive positions. Employment is contingent upon successful drug and alcohol screening and subject to random testing.
    Street Specific
    Within one year of employment:
    • State Pesticide Applicator's License
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
    • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
    • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
    • Communicate with City employees and residents.
    • Lift or move items weighing up to 100 pounds regularly.
    • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
    • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Exposure to hazardous materials and noise from equipment.
    • Work is performed within the right of way, and in high traffic conditions.
    • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
    • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
