Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director for the AHMCT Research Center (also referred herein as the "Center") this position is essential in the field testing and deployment of prototype research equipment, the primary function of the Center, and Center facility support. The scope and duties of this position are confined entirely to the Center.

Research Center Support

Under supervision, support the research activities of the center and other staff members. This will include coordination of facility maintenance and improvements with appropriate departments within the university. It will also include the coordination with non-university services when required to maintain the Center's equipment. This position will work with the Center's Associate Operations Manager to ensure that the Center is properly maintained by working on short-term and long-term tasks aligned with the Center's direction.

Prototype Vehicle Integration, Testing, Maintenance, and Support

Under supervision, support the development, vehicle integration, field testing, maintenance, and repair of prototype research equipment to be used in highway maintenance construction research projects at the Center. This will include coordination of user acceptance. Interpret industry practices versus Center needs, exercise effective judgment to assess appropriate direction, and provide strategic input and options for technical solutions. During all testing activities, escalate software and other technical problems to the research and development team. Manage projects, schedule asset deployment, develop utilization reports, provide technical training and assistance on an as-needed basis to funding agency technical personnel and end users, junior employees, students, and other AHMCT staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in a collaborative environment supporting teammates and working independently to meet the organization's goals and customer's needs.
  • Proven ability to communicate with co-workers or customers such as technicians or operators to understand their needs and concerns.
  • Basic fabrication skills with power tools to support independent work in the lab and in the field.
  • Mechanical skills in support of electrical instrumentation, including cabling, wiring harnesses, connectors, conduits, and mounting hardware fabrication and installation.
  • Proven ability in troubleshooting and maintaining electro-mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to function in multiple industries such as construction, fabrication, and testing.
  • Proven ability to learn new skills that may be necessary to complete job requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skills providing and/or supporting technical training to customers, clients, or fellow employees at various levels of skill.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical issues to support electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to independently execute a test plan and document the results for hardware, software, systems, or equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to create technical documentation for processes, systems, and applications.

The Center is a collaborative effort between UC Davis and Caltrans and has been the largest recipient of external funding in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) for 25 years. The Center receives up to $6 million in funding annually. Based on both continuity and amount of ongoing funding, the Center is key to educational and research opportunities afforded to students in MAE.

Physical Demands

  • Position requires lifting objects weighing up to 50 lb. and driving multiple types of vehicles.
  • Position requires working at hazardous locations and in extreme temperatures ranging from sub-freezing in ice and snow to 150 F on hot pavement.
  • Must adhere to safety procedures including use of safety devices such as hardhats, safety glasses, vests, gloves, etc.

Work Environment

  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must be available for on-call and/or be able to work alternate work hours and overtime (including weekends, nights and holidays) on short notice, especially during extended testing periods.
  • A valid California Driver's License is required. At times, position requires working at non-campus sites including AHMCT off campus sites, Caltrans field-test sites throughout the State, and in research partner states. Some overnight travel in and out of state required.
  • Position is subject to random testing by the Department of Transportation for drug and alcohol.
  • Must participate in Department of Motor Vehicle's Pull Notice System.
  • Must possess a valid CA unrestricted Class A or B driver's license.
